Importing from cinema 4d?

by Jan Guilfoyle · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 02/08/2007 (7:40 am) · 8 replies

Right well I know Milkshape 3D seems to be the most common way to do this. I am modelling in Cinema 4D mainly, so i export the files as .obj's and bring them into Milkshape. Then I export these as .dts and put them into a directory in Torque. The models themselves go into the engine fine, but there are no textures on them! I have tried even texturing in Milkshape and then putting them into Torque but no luck. I know most people arent using Cinema 4D but can anyone tell me how they do it, or if there is a better way than Milkshape to get .dts files. To be honest, Im really surprised that there isnt a simpler way. Can anyone suggest anything?

I haven't used Milkshape in years, but did you UV Map the model or just apply textures to the faces?

I just applied textures to the faces, nothing to complex.

You dont say much about your textures or how you assign texture in Milkshape. First is your texture jpg or png, Torque only support them. Next are they power of 2 (128 x 128, 256 x 256, 256 x 512, 512 x 512, etc). I can tell Milkshape export model that work in Torque. If you like email me one your simple I will setup for in Milshape. It real easy to get simple model out MilkShape.

I can not test this since I do not own Cinema4d, but you might want to try exporting models to the .FBX format, then importing them into Milkshape. You might be able to transfer animations too with FBX.

Alright perhaps I understand my problem a little better now. I think the problem lies in Cinema 4D .obj conversion. It doesnt export any textures with an obj, the .mtl file might as well not be there. So I used the riptide obj exporter plugin to try it, however milkshape then wouldnt import obj's from riptide so I couldnt do that. Are there any other programs out there with .dts export? What do most people generally use?

I tried Louis' suggestion of fbx but as it turns out cinema 4d once again performed ridiculously on the texture front. For some reason a mostly black object went red. I will keep trying on it anyway, and let you know if I need any more help.

Cheers,

Jan

Blender is free and can work with OBJ files. Unfortunately, like most OBJ implementations, I'm not sure how it will react between C4D's export and Blender's import.

I use LightRay3d, it is not free but work oustanding for me. It is little like 3dsMax to use. Have you try any other formats like 3ds. I dont have cinema 4d so not sure it exports are.
