Looking for more activity

No disrespect to anyone, but this forum kind of sucks. Just look down any of the forums at the dates posted and you should know what I mean. Post a question or two and you will know even better what I mean. There is almost zero activity on this board, which means IF you get help, it probably won't be until you've either fixed it yourself through a week or two of smashing your head, or you've given up and walked away. What I want to know is, is there another forum somewhere with an active community? I love using TGB, but I can't get any help for it. I get stuck on the simplest of things (difference in syntax between languages for example) and I will spend DAYS looking up the information.

If any GG employee's read this, please PLEASE hire some people to do documentation. Your docs are horrible. The tutorials are a good step, but you need to have at least the basics explained. You need someone to explain how GUI elements work, how basic functions work, etc., and have them all in an easy to read location. By explain I mean with code samples and everything. I would pay for such a thing if required, but I would really expect this to already be a part of the engine.

Anyway, I love TGB (which is what I use), but it's extremely frustrating and in it's current state I will not recommend it to anyone.

First of all, you do realize that this forum has nothing to do with TGB, correct? This forum is only for discussing issues about TDN itself.

You should subscribe to the TGB forums if you haven't already.

Have you even looked at the tutorials, the TGB reference documentation, or the articles on TDN themselves?
Name another game engine suite that sells for 3 digits that has 3 different books related to developing games with their products.

For the record, GG forums average more than 800 posts a day--and if you think that means "zero activity", then no disrespect intended, but good luck finding a more active community anywhere.

Was going to say something but Stephen beat me to it. There is nothing as good that I have seen in all of my years as good as the Garage Games community.

But hey if you want almost immediate answers, do you use the ICQ chat for Garage Games?

Yes I suppose I didn't quite realize this is a forum for TDN. Sorry about that. Yes I have posted on the TGB forums and it's slim pickings. Unles there is another forum than this one that is for Garage Games...? Look obviously I've annoyed you and I wasn't intending too, but I was not just being a prat. Those books are not geared towards TGB, so if you are developing using TGB it can be very frustrating.

Yes I constantly use the TDN, but it has far less activity than I would like as well. Many of the articles on there are outdated, but I have found some good use from the TDN. I have written an article on there myself.

I have ordered The Game Programmer's Guide to Torque in the hopes that it will contain some of the information that I am looking for, but like I've said, from what I can see it is geared towards TGE. From what I have been able to gather from different forum posts, it is somewhat useful to TGB users so I will hopefully find it useful.

Anyway sorry I've annoyed you. I simply wish I didn't have to spend 3-4 days trying to figure out how to do something simple with the GUI or whatever that I should be able to do intuitively.

(Btw I just looked down the list and see that I clicked on the wrong General link.)

ICQ chat for GG? No I don't...how do I do that? I haven't used ICQ in years, but I still remember my number. I'm not sure if it would work or not but I could always make a new account. I currently use MSN for quick communication.

While there was no outright hostility, the tone of your first post could have invoked it quickly. A simple re-reading should make it apparent why. Reversals are commonly associated with invocation on the internet. For example, "No disrespect intended, Mr. Wilson, but your wife is an ugly disease riddled whore who gets ridden more than the toilets of Grand Central Station. No offense intended, of course."

To get to IRC.
1. Click community from the main menu.
2. Click the IRC link (third link below the banner on the right hand side of the screen).
3. You don't have to have some other IRC name. Your GG account will be there and you can choose your name. MaxGaming runs the IRC server.
4. Login.

Oooh IRC ok. I guess Ron accidentally typed ICQ :) Thanks for the info.

I've always hated forums. I always feel like I come off as a total jerk...I'm not really a people person in real life and I think it shows on boards. Oh well, I try anyway.

Well hell I just now realized that I'm a bit of a prat. All this time I simply wasn't subscribed to the TGB private forums. I simply assumed that since the system locks me out of stuff I don't own, I would already be subscribed to the stuff I do own. Following this logic, I should already have been subscribed to all there is for TGB. Obviously I wasn't... I do believe I should have been, but oh well. All fixed now hopefully :)
