Am I allowed to use the fps starter kit server for my games?

by Weston Elliott · in Torque Game Engine · 01/23/2007 (4:43 pm) · 15 replies

I just have a quick question...

The FPS Starter Kit uses the server 2:master.garagegames.com:28002, am I allowed to use this server for my games? If so how to I make a private channel for only my game to connect to on this server?

It is there for testing and example purposes only. It is not and will not be a commercial service, and has no guarantees of being up at any particular time.

Short answer: no.

So it's there for us to use while testing. Good to know.

Out of curiosity is the server software they use avaliable for use, or would we have to create our own? I'm not against writing the app myself, I'd just rather not reinvent the wheel unless necessary.

You can use the Master server with TNL. If you do not want to release any changes you make, you can purchase an indie license. Otherwise it is GPL'd.

Warning : Virus in TNL

if you download de sorce code (TNL Source 1.5.0 February 22, 2005)

"tnl-1.5.0-source.zip\tnl\exe\installer\nsisdl.dll"

found this virus -> www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2006-091511-1921-99

Anyone else run into the same issue as Francisco? Worst case the DLL could simply be replaced (as I believe that nsisdl.dll is from the nullsoft installer app, isn't it?).

I would also like to know the answer to this question...

TNL is clean. This case is a false positive. A good catch, just in case, but a false positive.

Did you download TNL and look at the master server?

No

Is that the one that GG is using for their FPS Starter Kit test server? (2:master.garagegames.com:28002)

Tnl-1.5.0-source.zip\tnl\exe\installer\nsisdl.dll

^^^Is that the latest version?

It was the Zap! master server, and perhaps more. There is most likely some special fine tuning codewise, but that is something that your net tech will want to fine-tune to your setup anyway.

And I do believe it is the latest version. There may be an internal trunk at GG, but it is the latest public release.

Of course it cannot be displayed. It is not a URL.

Torque Network Library

It includes ZAP!
