Thanks for your answer. I have tried with .png values ranging from 0% - 100% transparency. there are no difference at all. As soon as I have alpha on the character it is 100% reflective. Pretty strange.

When you save your PNG's make sure to use Photoshop's 'Save for Web' function

You need the old version of the SuperPNG plugin in order to save alpha maps. Otherwise photoshop saves adobe's "transparency", but not an actual alpha channel.

3DS can't read transparency. It requires the alpha channel. So, you'll need to find a PNG exporter that supports alpha channels. The new SuperPNG followed Adobe's lead and killed alpha channels, but the "obsolete" version works fine.
You can download that from TDN's repository. If you take this route, remember to save your files as SuperPNG, and not the standard PNG.
There are also older versions of Adobe's exporter floating around so you don't have to remember to do that.
Good luck!

Yes, Adobe really screwed up its PNG export; out of the box, Photoshop exports "transparency", but not an alpha channel. 3DS can't read transparency. It requires the alpha channel. A final note about superpng: delete the Adobe png format plugin or rename its extension so it isn't loaded, otherwise it will stomp the superpng plugin.

Tga saves alpha. That does not work either.
btw. do any of you guys know why exporting texture animation does not work in the new 1.3 Exporter. It workes fine in the old one. I get this error message saying "Topology on mesh animated".
Or do you know how to set this up.
thanks

Reflection spinner to 100% and ticked.
Do you have Multires modifier applied to the mesh.

Did you copy the texture bitmap material into the Reflection slot?Reflection spinner to 100% and ticked.

I only have mesh objects. but a lot of mesh-objects on my character. Othervise no modyfiers.
Reflection just wont work. It's eighter 0 (Zero) reflection or 100 percent reflection. pretty strange.
And the reflection spinner in the 1.3 exporter for 3ds max 9 does not have any function at all. (Nor did this spinner have any influence in max 8 eighter).
This seems to be a huge mistery.
