Texture names and LOD

Can you have texture names that end in _#.jpg (eg. door_1.jpg, door_2.jpg etc) or will this interfere with the way TGE1.5 handles LOD?

(I'm getting some weird crashes that happen when a DIF is viewed from far away and I'm wondering if this could be a possible cause)

Numbers in filenames shouldnt be messing up lod.
