Lagging

We're having problems when we try to create an environment. As we put more things in example: trees, trees on fire, a modified vehicle, and various changes to the environment the system lags a great deal and I was wondering how do I fix this?

Not computors performance, we have a computor that can well run torque dur to the fact that torque isnt that advance to begin with. Our computor isnt even half a year old yet. Plus trees arent moving with wind or anything else there standing still. and also due to the fact that torque isnt thee most technologically advance program out there it should be able to run smoothly with what we put in. The only other thing to try is to make the level and then export it as one mesh. If that doesnt work i think its time to move away from torque, but any other suggestions would help.
