Lost Colony causing a stir in the MMOFPS community

Why are they taking pre orders for this game?

www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jDVUorcat0

That's December build with a Jan launch???? BOGGLE????

There are some heated treads going on in a couple other MMOFPS forums
and in the LC forums. LC staff banning cash paying customers (off there own forum) that are asking
questions about why does it look like Torque FPS demo etc.

It's Christmas and the last thing I want to do it post a negative thread. Apologies to LC folks.

But look.. I think it merits a heads up to the GG development community as it already bleeding
negative insider buzz about Torque shooter products in general.

Yeah... This totally looks better conceived and developed and than Planetside, with a much more mature fan base... I don't know why they haven't been bought out by SOE already!

Funny stuff at those forums, It's almost as good as an ALOD. No, even better!
This has really lightened my day from good to hilarious, I needed that.

I wonder if there "new netcode" is one of the MMO packs? (are there more than one? I know about Dreamers).

They are confusing "new netcode" with the fact that you can't connect a TGE client with a TGEA one without killing a few if statements.

They took a screen shot from the FPS Environment Pack and claimed it as their own?!?!?!?!??!?!? A bunch of people have worked many hours to give them material for their screen shots, too bad it hasn't been done by them.

Say what you want about that game... errr game? really not one (yet; and not in January as they state it); but I like the music from the video.
And, please don't tell me it is a known one, do you?

@ Thomas - something tells me if they were a part of this community... and legit, they would have spoken up by now. Is this possibly the first of its kind? An MMO scam? Or simply a poorly conceived Indie developed game?

... when is the next episode again?

@Stephan
I'm sure that they contracted System of a Down's Toxicity. They are a MMO, after all! Who wouldn't want to jump on that money?

This is the Public Whois info on the company's website Lostcolonygame.com

Quote:Administrative Contact:
Hodges, Andy andy@gameshout.com
Red Planet, LLC

Which is strange because if you go to Gameshout.com and search for Lost Colony you get nothing.

Boggle? So is LC a game product owned by Gameshout?

Andy Hodges has obviously lost his mind. Many of you may or may not have heard about the whole fiasco with the merger of Halflifesource.com and gameSHOUT.com, but anyways, since that time, gameSHOUT had decided to take Valve to court over something involving one of the websites GS owns.

http://www.steamgames.com. Apparently due to the Bill statement, many people thought that this website was technical support for Valve, although I never interpreted it as such. Andy proposes he had to hire 30 more staff just to keep the website up and running, and to deal with all the people coming to the website for help. Shortly after the lawsuit for 25.5 million for damages was announced, it was subsequently announced that an agreement had been reached with Valve.

Apparently this is the agreement. Valve is giving a percentage of royalties from online Steam accounts to gameSHOUT.com.

Andy Hodges, who was once the owner of Halflifesource.com has bitten the hand that feeds him. GameSHOUT.com was birthed from Halfliferadio... and this is how he repays the company that basically gave him a job (although indirectly)

Gameshout.com obviously bought the mentioned web domains for the express purpose of using them for financial gain from Valve. He knew that online viewers would associate them with Valve Software and Steam, and thus knew that eventually Valve would want to buy them, to protect their name. Andy, and gameSHOUT.com in general is nothing but a website of waste and despair, full of shameful individuals with nothing more than money on their mind. They have no respect for the games industry, or the companies that produce them. They seem to forget that without these companies, they would have no job, no place in this world.

There is more about gameSHOUT.com however, which must be brought to light. There have been allegations of fraud in terms of member numbers on the website forums. Inflated figures, multiple user accounts, fake accounts etc.

At this time, there are 3454 members approx who have posted the gameshout.com forums. Most of these are 1-3 posts. There are over 5000 members with NO POSTS AT ALL. In any case, this is odd, and I do not trust them at all.

I would sincerely hope that anyone who reads this decides to boycott gameSHOUT.com

When trying to reach Andy for comment, all I got in response was, "we owned you, and you got nothing, we owned you!"

Oh and a bunch of this : " Right over your head! You got owned, you got nothing, we got everything."

Wow. For an administrator of a website, Andy Hodges sure is quite immature. I seriously hope anyone reading this considers boycotting gameSHOUT.com

It seems that Andy has used his title in the community that made him, for much more than providing for the community, but to turn it into a money-making scheme for his greedy self. This is totally unacceptable.

Edit Add: I just downloaded the version .30 build. They must have a commercial license because there
is no reference to GG or Torque on loading.

I'm surprised GG hasn't said anything yet...

Na it's not a week for them to work. They need to relax.. We got this right now.. (lifts pitchfork)

This game is going nowhere unless it's cleaned up and the content is added. The power
of the internet has put a big fork in it for the time being...

And depending on what happens on the 1st... and if they have commercial license or not. Since they accepted payments without using the GG logo and strippout out all other GG references (they REALLY cleaned up after this story broke for the 030 it's totally cleaned out).

There aren't any references on pirated versions, either. At least if they have their scripting props.

Why would they? Hehe, I love how they brag about their "explosions" on the forums when it's the regular crossbow explosion from the starter.fps. Humour! :)

@Stefan - They would because it's doubtful the game makers have a commercial license, yet they don't show any GG splashes, etc.

It looks like this website owner dude and some Halflife modders found out about torque. They either got a license or hacked warez. Then.. 6 weeks ago or so buy the URL. Use there glitzy forum technique to generate buzz. Rip off Planetside's storyline and take some pre-orders with a totally stripped out FPS demo.

A little honest would of been better. They should of asked for donations and cleaned up the plan and WAY stretched out there timeline to something more realistic. They are promising 2-3 milestones a day till Jan 1st?

Nothing at all wrong with an existing game(s) to influence a new game. But it must be done with respect to the many people that made the product and delivered a GOOD family friendly massive carnage shooter to the world. Couple GG folks have some old school ties to Planetside btw. Smokejumper and other folks if I remember correctly. I don't know the whole story but Tribes 2 influenced PS.

So whatever games LIKE IT should be of high quality so we can all sleep at night. It's bad Dev Karma man..

As others have pointed out, lostcolony is either a total scam or else an utterly naive but genuine attempt by some inexperienced developers. I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt, but unfortunately the sheer mass of lies and misinformation posted on their forums would give me serious doubts that it can be anything but a scam. They only recently admitted they were using Torque at all, for anything other than the GUIs.

edit: you'd have to feel sorry for the suckers who have shelled out pre-order fees for this one. But on another level, they really are asking to be ripped off if they believe that site.
