Login not working right; can't access private/licensed areas

The login system doesn't seem to be working right, even when I say to set the cookie to keep me logged in. Because of this, I can't access the various licensee-only areas of the site most of the time. Also, the "anonymous user" Cart/Login links always appear, even when I'm viewing the My Account page.
I experience this problem with Firefox/1.5 on Linux, Firefox/1.5.0.7 on WinXP, Firefox/2.0 on WinXP, and IE 6 on WinXP. (In all cases these are public computers; the middle two cases are the PortableFirefox distributions that I carry with me). Because this crosses over both browsers and operating systems, I suspect that it's likely a problem on GG's end. I've not been able to find any consistent workarounds to the problem.
