Lost Colony Game - need gamedev's advice

by Gar Field · in Torque Developer Network · 12/19/2006 (5:09 am) · 7 replies

Hi, I don't now if i'm in the right place or not.

There is this game company, Red Planet and they claim to be working a new MMOFPS (Lost Colony). Some of us are very skeptical and we're trying to decide if it's a real game or just a scam to get people to pre-order and get their money. I would like an opinion of game developers about this.

Lost Colony website: http://www.lostcolonygame.com
The Forums: http://www.lostcolonygame.com/forums

They say that the game is finished and they have a demo up for server stress test purposes, the demo can be found here: http://download.lostcolonygame.com/LostColonyTest.exe

This demo is based on the Torque engine, and seems to me that such a demo can be made in a few days. The devs are also very quick on reacting to any post regardind it to be a scam and have even deleted posts.

I would like to ask the game developers in here about your opinion. Could this be real or could this be just a scam?

If you want to know whether it's worth buying why not sign up for their beta?

The game is real. Download the latest client build. Better yet, download the new one for Tomorrow.

Gar - If I were you, I'd wait for the official release come the new year. If you have any doubts, stay away.
There are many of us here who are skeptical but are erring on the side of "wait and see".

@Gar Field

Currently there is little or no evidence that lost colony actually exists as a product. A server test would have been carried out with an actual client version of the game as this is the only way to test actual performance so their version 030 is testing nothing but the connection to the server.

I would wait until the January beta materialises before even considering anything to do with this game. For thse that have pre-ordered all is not lost as, if the beta mysteriously does not materialise, then legal recourse is possible and monies can be recovered by following a legal course of action.

@Andy Hodges

If this is legitimate, then you should not be taking pre-orders until you have a product that is in beta. You are walking a very fine line between fraud and overconfidence. The former is a federal matter so be aware of the consequences should that in any way be your intent!

Thanks for all your reactions. I'm not spending any money until I've had the change to try something for at least a week.

I've had some experience with the torque engine. All I have seen now of the Lost Colony game is a modified Torque demo, that's why I don't trust this.

I'll wait till Jan 3rd to give it a go. No way I'm going to pre-order the game. I'd like to give the same advice to anyone else.

Hey guys, hate to step in but the constructiveness of this thread has vanished. Please bring further discussions on this game or issues to their website or a more appropriate place. :)

Lost Colony has nothing to do with GarageGames and it is not being supported or developed in any form by GarageGames or independently by it's employees.

Best of luck with the game to the developers. To the consumers, as with any internet purchases, always be careful with what information you give out. This game is independently operated.
