Maya & character moving

Hi, I'm wondering if, for example, my character's walk animation actually needs to move forward in maya, or could it just stay walking in one spot. If it needs to move, would the back animation need to really move backward then? I would perfer the animations to stay in one spot because it looks smoother. If anyone could shed some light on the subject I would appreciate it, thanks =p

Yes, the characters need to move both forward and backwards. The best way to do it is to parent the root of the skeleton, your ik's and all your solvers to a mover dummy object. After you have a smooth animation going, just animate the mover object forward. Make sure the feet don't slide. Then copy the keys from the mover object to your bounding box and your are set.
