When to use .dts and when to use .dif ?

Other than the obvious benefits of animation capaabilites of a .dts, and the ability to enter a .dif, when would you use one or the other if you did not need to enter a building, and it did not animate.
Like static placment of items like rocks, sandbags and other items, is there some kind of performance reasoning to use one over the other.
I know that a .dts can give you WAY more detail, and the .dif has automatic collision detection.
