Paypal?

by Mark Cooper · in General Discussion · 12/04/2006 (8:22 pm) · 11 replies

Any chance of paypal support some time in the future?

or failing that, being able to use my maestro debit card would be just as good

Personally, I avoid paypal now. I was with it for a while and it works fine but I keep getting fake emails that look all too real which send me to a site with an address real close to paypal and ask me for stuff like my bankcard PIN. Or they want my password for paypal but there's no "click here if you've forgotten your password" link. I've got nothing against paypal but for fear of screwing up one day I closed my account. And I still get emails like...

Its more the fact that would be able to use my bank card
as opposed to a credit card since i don't have one

GG only takes VISA, MasterCard, Check or MoneyOrders and since i don't have any of the first 3 and theres no such thing as a moneyorder in the UK (we have an equivalent but its only UK based, not that air mailing a money order would be practical anyway) I'm kinda stuck.

I'm not sure why GG doesn't support it anyway, surely it will give them more sales meaning more money.

I don't think it's that simple. As far as I know, the Maestro cards still need a physical reader for the data stored on the magnetic strip (or on the chip nowadays), which means you need to have a card reader.
As far as I know, there aren'tt any payment processors that provide that service, which makes it economically impossible for GG to implement something themselves. It's not their core business, and one needs to have loads of contracts to get something like that off the ground. After which you need millions of transactions to be able to recuperate the initial development costs.

PayPal takes massive chunks of your sale, tends to freeze your account at random and in general is completely worthless as a payment processor. The only saving grace they have is they are ubiquitous and simple to setup.

We (Dream Games Inc, makers of the MMOKit) did a calculation some months ago and realized that we have given up USD $3,000+ to PayPal which accounted for well in excess of 5% of sales. Had we've gone with a proper credit card/bank processor our processing fees would have been less than $1,500.

To make matters worse, PayPal does not protect you (assuming you are an online merchant with a downloadable product) in anyway from chargebacks. Especially in cases where say little Johnny took mommy's credit card to buy the product. Or where someone claims they never ordered (probably got hit by a phishing scam and gave up their online details).

My point is this, I don't blame GG for not using PayPal, and if you have the chance to go with a viable alternative, you absolutely should.

Dreamer

DONT GET ME started on Paypal. They locked my account because I will not give them my bank account information. If I am paying by credit card, WHY do the need my checking account info? Oh wait... so they can have direct access to accounts so they can have accounts frozen and locked. Remember PayPal operates as an illegal bank. Customer service is outsourced to the Philippines (Buendia Avenue, Makati - BPI Building to be exact). www.paypalsucks.com is a good place to start.

I wish companies (such as Dream Games) would have an alternative payment systems/ schemes.

Any payment scheme is fine, so long as i can use it to pay for things. which i can not do with GG's current system.

paypal is just an easy way for me, some ppl have had bad experiences but thats true of most services, nothing is perfect.

Hey Dreamer.. just a heads up... if this occurs, fight it. In the trade this is known as "Friendly fraud", and the liability lies with Mommy allowing the Credit card/Debit card to be in a place where it can be accessed.

Terms and Conditions of Card Issue are always along the lines of "card shall not be given to others or allowed to be used by others and it is cardholders responsability to protect the card issued to them".

If PayPal or anyone else refuses it and claims you are liable.. go direct to your Bank and claim a chargeback against PayPal.

It's a pain, but too many people allow friendly fraud claims to go unchallenged. In this case the liability is with the cardholder and the issuer as the transaction was taken in good faith with all information being correct.

Even though PayPal will claim that the transaction is Merchants liability due to the fact that all e-commerce liability is tending towards Merchants, Friendly Fraud should be classed as an exception.

If the bank won't help, try going direct to Visa / Mastercard.

No guarantees, but it's worth a shot, especially if you use the right language:)

In regards to the claim "I never ordered it" Demand a Legal Affidavit showing the cardholders claim and stating that this transaction was fraudulent, witnessed and signed by an appropriate authority... again, as a merchant you have a right to protect yourself, and a Legal Affidavit makes a lot of people think twice about making the claim if its just a try-0n.
