Clear-cut Hit Point / Damage HUD system?

I've been going over the A3DGP All-In-One book covering Damage Control. The references function Armor::onDamage to ImpactSuchAndSuch is a bit confusing. Could someone show me a clear cut HitPoint system linked to the GuiHealthBarHud()? Maybe show some imlpementation of falling from a certain hit does 1 point of damage to you?
Just having a hard time understanding the code in its present state. I know anything can be changed in the source code, which I have. However, I have to complete this by mid-Dec. and was wondering if its do-able through scripting alone. At least something to get me pointed in the right direction.
