NOTHING with the book works

I have windows XP pro, directx and all that, but I can't run a single example OR self-made script using the tge.exe that came with the book CD. I had the same problem as others before;
Video Init:
Accelerated OpenGL display device not detected.
Accelerated D3D device not detected.
Voodoo 2 display device not detected.
"D3D" display device not found!
"OpenGL" display device not found!
"D3D" display device not found!
"Voodoo2" display device not found!
But I've tried absolutely everything suggested in other places, like changing lines in the client/prefs.cs, rearranging files and getting newer versions, uprgading directX and openGL, changing the DLLs in the folder... nothing seems to work, all it does is execute an error at different times. I KNOW my computer is capable, because I downloaded the newer demo version of torque from this website, and it worked just fine. Then I tried using the demo.exe (along with other .cs files), and replacing the originals... again, nothing works. I can't even run the first HelloWorld program. Only the Demo- with demo.exe- works.
Any more suggestions? I'm all out.

@Badguy, I had gone to my video hardware manufacturer's website and tried to update the driver (windows hardware update couldn't find it), but it wouldn't let me install it. I just recently went to dells website tho and got it... and now everything works. Thanks tho, I wasn't exspecting a reply! =)

Do not use Windows Update to upgrade your hardware drivers. Always use the manufacturer's site. Windows update usually makes use of the compatibility mode drivers rather than the specific ones for your card/chipset.
