Engine Capabilities (details)

by Chris Helms · in Torque Game Engine · 04/26/2001 (12:37 am) · 28 replies

I am just wondering if there is a detailed list of the engine's capabilities and features, such as bitmap loading(does it support TGA loading and transparency?), available mapping techniques, and that sort of thing.
I am very interested in the specifications so I know if it will support some of our models and scenes with transparency, and other details...
I'd also like to know what exactly will be supported in 3D Studio MAX exporting (lights, texturing coordinates and poly-coloring, cameras, particle systems, that sort of thing).

>You obviously have a thing for MAX...
Something you work hard for, you are bound to want/like.

>I don't think GG will provide you with an 100% across the board MAX compatable version of V-12 for the same price...so it would prolly be in your best intrest to look elsewere for your game engine needs...

I am not looking for 100% compatability, I'm looking for the options of faster level design. A format that handles multiple objects like that would be helpful for most all world editors, not just big ones.

How does their current editor work? Is it possible to somehow make it skip the process of working in that editor by doing what it does in the export process?

My point about the money is that you really don't get it for $100.
For many bigger game developers than make lots of money, they would rather buy a new engine for $10,000 - $30,000 then go with this deal, because they would loose even more money with this one.
You end up paying more than that if your game makes it.
I don't mind doing that at all, its a great engine, a great opportunity, but it isn't really $100 for using the engine with a game.

I took a look at the Tribes2 box screenshots, and one or two online. It looks like it can handle a lot of polygons. The graphics are pretty good.
I'd like to know more about the engines performance. Someone said slow loading times?
Probably because the game is so big and dynamic right?

this is sortof off topic but can someone post the tribes 2 info?

system requirements (stated on box and from your experiences), approx level load times, and anything else you can think of.

thanks/

Chris,

I'll ceede the point, Max is probably a better level-editing tool, and especially with an experienced operator. Here are a few ideas that are both cheap, and not time-intensive to help your decision:

To get the Max data:
A) Write a Max Importer for V12.
B) Write a V12 Exporter for Max. (probably easier)

To view it in V12:
C) Purchase a V12 liscense, use the datafiles created above to load and view them. ($100)
D) Purchase Tribes 2, use it to view the level created. ($50)
E) Use the Tribes 2 Demo (coming soon) to view it. ($0)

If you like the V12 engine, but not the 50% royalty or other restrictions, GG has stated that they are willing to work out other deals with a competent team. You should mail the GG staff about these opportunities.

hmm cant you just import your geometry fom Max to the engine whats the big deal, with engines ive worked with the choice was up to the designer, you may have to use a format the engine will import or write a plugin, it is a hundred bucks which is about 5 figures cheaper than any other engine with this capability.

I'm not good at the exporter/importer stuff...
I have more things that I need to do, more important things than writing exporters and importers...

Sorry Chris, but tool development is a necessary part of the game design and development process. I hate to be brutal about it, but no-one is going to hand it to you on a plate. V12 isn't a State-of-the-art Klik&Play.

Chris, you are exhausting.

Stop being so wishy washy and go buy the damn thing here.

All of your questions can be answered by a couple of things:

Buy the game, use the editor, look at the scripts.

Download and experiment with QRadient, WorldCraft, UT Editor. (hint: these were used to make commercially successful games!)

Get (and more importantly read) these books:

3D Game Engine Design by David H. Eberly

Game Programming Gems edited by Mark DeLoura

Designing 3D Games That Sell! by Luke Ahearn

Game Architecture and Design by Andrew Rollings and Dave Morris

If you are unwilling to do even one of these items, then get out now before someone gets hurt around here :p .

I really am trying to help, I just think that you are asking the wrong questions and only confusing yourself.

Good Luck!

....after edit: I guess the list syntax doesn't work! sorry folks! ..............

I just bought a new computer (no money for a while).

Does anyone know where you can get food for free or very little money?

(just kidding)
