Crossbow and Max9 problems?

by Dave D · in Artist Corner · 11/04/2006 (11:23 am) · 16 replies

Has anyone tried opening "crossbow.max with Max9?

I tried and Max crashed. Am trying to figure out if it is a file issue or a installation issue with Max.

I doesn't work... and (atleast for me) has never worked.. always crashed
On max 6, Max 7, Max 8 AND Max 9
Whats up with that... i think the file was made in Max 5... but that wouldn't EVER make the future versions of Max to crash....
there must be some huge flaw/error with that file..
and its just sad that they haven't made it work for us with newer versions... i would LOVE to see how the weapon is made by studying it...

Well then, this is the "Official Request"

Can we please have an updated version of the crossbow.max file?

um, how long have you been using 3dsmax? I will put fixing this on my to do list.

I have been using max since 3D Max r1 (1996)... why?

And BTW Thanks for "putting it on the "To do" list" :)

@Joe

Hmm, I had thought that I send GG a fixed version (max 5 thru 8) of all the asset files already? If you need me to send them again Joe please let me know.

@Others

As for what is causing the models to crash, its an issue with the Multires modifier that was used to initially generate the file.

In regards to file compatability, unfortunately Joe is correct. There are times when changes to the application will cause certain features to fail to load properly when loading an older file into a newer one. I personally know that Autodesk is trying to ensure that this doesnt happen with the latest releases, but still its a pretty big application.

it was in reference to the sentence I quoted. There have been problems with max supporting things in older files ever since version 1.

Certain features, especially ones that used to be 3rd party plugins (like MultiRes) often had problems when trying to use older files in newer versions. I have quite a few 'old' max 1, 2, and 3 files that either don't open in newer versions or have issues when opened in newer versions, and the only 'flaw' with those files is that some used procedural materials and special animation controls.

I will look over the file when I get into work on Monday and see what is up with it.

Here is a temporary download home for the Torque Game Engine 3DS Max Assets (max versions 5 thru 8). The file is about 10mb in size and contains all the files found in the CVS repo, each with their own specific Max 5, 6, 7 and 8 folder.

I will leave the file up for a couple of weeks, after that GG should hopefully have it hosted or in SVN/CVS.

THANKS... ALOT! you guys!

And the reply to Joe...
There have been issues with Older max files not opening in newer versions... but it has SUPPORTED it
... but yeah you are right that it has never worked to well (the newer version work fine though... yet)

But its a big application... and you never know when something is gonna break so that the some older files don't work.. ;)

Btw.. i just wanted to add...

The crossbow file for Max 5 (from L Foster) works perfectly in 3Ds Max 8 and 9..
So there is/was some huge flaw with your previous crossbow file ;)

@Bardur

The problem is a well known one actually, so there is no need to poke at the problem with a pointy stick.

FYI: Back when Max 5 came out there was an issue with the exporters which required you to load in the Multires.dlm from Max 4 into Max 5. Although this let you export DTS files perfectly fine it created a problem in that when an unmodified Max 5 (or newer release) read these Max files, it would see that there was Multires data, but the data in the Max file wasn't consistent with what the file readers were expecting to see in a Max 5 file (becaues of the Max 4 plugin being loaded and used in Max 5 to save the files).

As such a few months back Joe asked me to help correct the flaw by fixing all the CVS Max files so that people could properly read and use them, and here you have them.

Logan,

all of art assets crash 3d studio max for me too. Apparently GG hasn't gotten around to fixing it or hosting your files. Would you please enable your link once more?
