Importing 3D world Studio

by Morrie · in Torque Game Engine · 11/01/2006 (7:50 pm) · 8 replies

How do I import 3D world Studio in to TGE. I looked on the forums but didn't find much on it.
Do I need to purchase the pipeline for Cartography shop from Sickhead to do this.

Can someone help with this please.

Morrie,

I'm using version 5.43 of 3DWS but I *believe* the latest version, 5.52, is suppose to be working properly, but I haven't had the nerve to try it since successive versions were having some real problems in the map2dif conversion/export.

Basically what you need is to export your map to a directory in let's say "data\interiors\yourbuilding.map". 3DWS should copy all the textures needed to that directory and create a dif file (if the current version is working right, like I said, haven't tried a newer version).

Your export screen should be set up like this:

You should be using map2dif_plus. If you don't have it, post here and I'll upload mine and a link.
Hopefully this helps.

I'd create a folder in your 3DWS directory called "Torque" and drop this in there.

The export screen doesn't look like that.

I'm going to install 5.52 to a backup directory and look at it's setup. If it is still hosed, I'd suggest asking Josh at Leadwerks for version 5.43.

Ok. installed it. it does export, but you have to use "run map" to do it, and it will create a dif file, but it didn't copy the textures to the directory. I'm not sure if there is a option to do this, but there might be. Also I'm noticing that the textures aren't linking properly to the dif. I'll mess with it for a bit more, but it's as I suspected, the later versions are not as Torque friendly as 5.43 (and earlier) were.

Ok, Morrie, got it to work but it's not the as "user friendly" as 5.43 was/is. What you have to do is export a .map first, choosing "Half-Life/Torque" from the drop down menu. This will create a .map file and copy the needed textures to the directory.

Next you have to select "Run Map" from the File drop down menu, select the map file in the directory that you created and then you'll get the dialog box that looks similar to the one above, just make sure the "Executible1" points to the folder where you put the "map2dif_plus.exe" file. The parameters setting should be the same as above.

When it's done you should have a .map, .dif and textures in the directory that you chose. if this is something like "~data\interiors\mymaps\mymap.dif" in your Torque starter.fps directory, you should be able to start torque, load a new mission (or any mission) and load the dif.
