Model turning into mush

by Thomas Kollmeier · in Artist Corner · 10/29/2006 (9:43 am) · 6 replies

Hey guys,

We've been having problems getting an animation .

It looks fine in ShowTools Pro but when we bring it in-game the characters turns in mush the moment the animation is executed (and also drops below the ground-level).

My teammate thinks he's followed all the modeling and exporting directions correctly. So he's at his wits end.

What else should we be looking for when that happens.

Thanks in advance.

How many polygons? Any pics?

I would check the skinning / binding of your model. If the model explodes when it starts animating, a poor skinning job would be a likely cause.

Thanks for the posts, guys. Appreciate the quick feedback.

Its around 2000 polys. I don't have a pic on me right now (at work).

Skinning huh? Is it also possible that if I didn't collapse the layers in 3DS Max before export that that would effect it at all?

[Edit: the poly count]

Model is around 2000 polies. Skinning is not an issue as far as I can tell, the animation as played in Showtool Pro www.studiosojourn.com/preview.mov

animation layers doesn't seem to be the cause. Just tested it in game. same distortions.

the distortion only occurs in game, and only in the lower body, from the hips down.

The idle animation exported with the same skeleton and settings works fine in game. the move animations included with the TGE works fine; but the salute animation does not.

really got me stumped as to where to look for a possible cause.

Hmmmm... are you exporting it with blends enabled? I am unfortunatly not too familiar with the Max export process, but that seems like it could be a explanation since it's only the bottom half that's being corrupted.

Reexport both the DTS and the DSQs that are being used.
