Constructor - are we there yet?

by James Bond · in General Discussion · 10/29/2006 (7:32 am) · 14 replies

Many moons ago, I was sniggered at by some in an IRC conversation, saying that constructor may be out in time for IGC 06. I think it was around February time. I was told that if it took that long then this unnamed person, would sit twiddling his thumbs for a long time. Well IGC (or its watered down equivalent has anyway) and still no constructor.
I think its release name should be Constructor Forever.

Only kidding guys, you are all doing a great job. Now that 1.5 is out, can we have a decent map tool aswell?

James,

I doubt you are going to get an official response from GG. If you click the "GarageGames" tabs in the blogs section, the two blogs from Matt Fairfax say "And no, we do not have a firm release date yet =P"

I would suggest buying 3d world studio, because Constructor probally won't be out for a while.

I don't want 3d World Studio. I want constructor.

We all want Constructor... but it's not out and doesn't look like it's going to be out soon.

So what are your choices, complain about it, or use something else until then. I guess you are doing the first, but I really don't think us asking the same question over and over is going to make them speed it up. I know when someone asks me over-and-over I tend to prolong what they are asking for just in spite ;)

Constructor probally isn't going to be out for a long while, you should either buy 3DWS or Quark. 3DWS is a better product on the other hand Quark is free. I waited for about 2 months, because I heard Constructor and the XSI exporter was supposed to be released in Feb or March. Well it didn't happen so I just started using 3d World Studio and Blender. It's amazing what you can do in blender and 3DWS. I've accomplished alot since I started using these programs and now I have 2 other programs I can use if I choose when Constructor comes out. So what I'm saying why waste time waiting for something to come out or get released.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not waiting on Constructor. I use Hammer, but Constructor looks so nice. And yes I agree blender is an amazing application. I have used it for several years ;)

Judging by the blog posts for Constructor, I doubt it it's wise spending money on 3D World Studio or DeleD. Constructor is being created FOR the torque engine, and features look more impressive and useful than anything else out there.

Just wait for it, and meanhwile, use QuarK.

If you need an editor now, then waiting for Constructor won't cut it :-)

Also, if the quality of Constructor will be the same as the quality of 1.5, then I'm not so sure it'll be worth waiting for X-/

JW,
What problems do you have specifically with the quality of TGE 1.5?

I personally was very impressed with TGE 1.5. Its not the TSE, but its what I'm currently using in my new project. TGE 1.5 does some amazing stuff and was worth my money.

Matt I dont know what problems JW is having, but I can tell you Im having problems with 1.5. My game is based mainly on manually moving objects using setvelocity(). For some strange reason, I'm getting an upward drift when I move objects like this. everything works fine for older versions of the engine. not sure if this helps.

I bought 3D World Studio while waiting for Constructor. I am also in the Constructor Beta. The maps translate perfectly from 3DWS to Constructor.

3DWS = Hammer
Constructor = UnrealEd

3DWS is very inexpensive and more than worth a month or two or three of use while waiting for Constructor.
