Why are the empty blocks drawn?

Hi, there seems to be something strange in the rendering of empty squares in TGE 1.4.2. Please see these screen shots:

Notice how the empty squares are not empty anymore when the camera moves further?
Another thing that has been bothering me is that the terrain cannot be flat or the empty squares wont appear.
Does any one else have these same issues? Any fix?

Cool thanks. I was wondering about empty squares also. But more over what emptySquares = ## is trying to do from the terrain datablock. I was always expecting it set the square size of terrain occlusion but have never seen any change no matter what number i use.
