2d space RPG

Well i was thinking

you should control a ship, in space
all in 2d, top down mode

and it would work kinda like an RPG,
you'd get a ship hull, and you'd put guns on it, and shields and upgrades and stuff, very customizable, you'd get so much space inside your ship, and so much outside to put items in, like guns and missile tubes and fighter launch bays and engines and shields and cargo bays and armor and other ability enhancing items

you'd fly around space, and shoot NPC's grab loot, sell it at stations, go between star systems by wormholes in preset places

your ship should fly with "asteroid" physics, you can turn your ship and propel in one direction, and your keep going in that direction, since there's no friction, except gravity form planets (some) and stars (more) and if you hit something (witch may or may not be implemented)

fighting would be pretty simple on the gun level, your move the mouse and click, your guns would track and fire where you clicked, missile may have to be locked on or something somehow, same with fighters

you'd skill up somehow (either by killing things, or some combination of things) and put skills into fighting, or mining, or flying, or even learn to fly a fleet of AI controlled ships under your command, and even place space station and fight the NPC empires for control of areas of space

what do you guys think?

EDIT: fixed a load of typing and spelling mistakes, google toolbar spellchecker for the win!

The reason people aren't posting (if they're like me) is that there are tons of those sorts of games already, though they are definitely fun and it sounds like a great project to build in TGB. There are lots of steps along the way and you could have a prototype up in no time. However, I don't think there are any "new" ideas in your post, so no one really had anything to say beyond "I know a game like that" or "Well, he should get working on it"

    So, go for it!

Sounds cool. Make it and I'll play the demo. If I like it, and all signs for games of this type point to an emphatic "YES!", then I'll buy it.
