Hammer - Texturing: limitations and requirements?

I have loaded up several .dif images just to play arround with the capabilities of the engine, and for the most part I am thoroughly impressed. However I have noticed that the textures I am using (from the demo interior file as well as the other generic terrain textures) appear blurry and convoluted when brought into the engine. Is it possible to apply detail style effects on these or are they limited in that capacity.

Also I am curious as to the texture size limitation on .dif. I realize that I have to load a 256x256 for the best performence in the terrain editor, however is this limitation imposed upon the .dif files I make in Hammer as well? If not how do I increase the aesthetic clarity of my models? I am sure it could also be a scale problem, however I did not notice such a pronounced issue with the demo interrior files.

Also, in the terrain editor I attempted to make cliffs, and by doing so I stretched the "vertices" (not sure if I am using the proper term) apart enough to cause any applied texture to stretch. Is there a method to texture this uniformly? Thanks for the help
