Staff guy says someone who has all the user made files contact
by Wolf Dreamer · in RTS Starter Kit · 09/26/2006 (7:22 pm) · 8 replies
I need all the most recent files people have made public for the RTS Starter Kit. We need to gather up everything, and send it to the staff, them agreeing to host it.
I tried emailing William Fox, who had posted everything over at this thread http://www.garagegames.com/mg/forums/result.thread.php?qt=44135 and had everything hosted on his davox.net account. That account is now expired, along with the files, and his email address listed was hosted on it as well.
Then I emailed a staff member from Garage Games.

Hi Thomas,
We don't have those files, but if you can get me in contact with the person who created them, or someone who has them, I'd gladly host them somewhere.
We're in the middle of major tech work to make supporting things like the RTS kit much easier both on us and the community - when that work is done we'll be going back and revisiting all of our packs as well as bringing out some cool new ones.

Matt Langley said I should email you about the files for the most up to date RTS Starter Kit.
The post about how to update it from 1.3 to 1.4 has nothing but dead links for the necessary files, and I can't get anyone there to respond. He said you should have them though, since you keep up on such things.
Several new people in the community have been searching for them.
It isn't just the update, but apparently there are files that contain all the other features people have added, all linked to in that topic, and hosted by its author, but alas, all those links are now dead.
I believe it makes sense to host these files on your official website, and to mention on the page where you sell the RTS Starter Kit, all the user added features to it. I was discussing that over at a recent topic on my forum found here. http://z8.invisionfree.com/Game_Maker_forum/index.php?showtopic=2254 Love to heve some feedback. I argue with Matt over there at times, and he clears up some of my insane worries and confusion for me. The more features that are listed, the more desirable the product as to buy after all.

One guy was mentioning the problems people had after 1.4 came out, and the official page for Torque 1.5 says it fixes the network problem.

(if there is a page that says you need 1.5 for the fixes please let me know and I'll make sure it's changed)

The official Torque page doesn't mention 1.5 yet, besides 1.4.2 is the being released around the same time - it includes all the bug fixes, just not the new features and free content.(if there is a page that says you need 1.5 for the fixes please let me know and I'll make sure it's changed)

Oh. This needs updating though. Its the page that Matt linked to, which seemed to support some of the claims Deus ex machina made about the network problems.
And you get bug fixes free, but just pay for the new features. Good. It didn't say that before on that page, so you need to make that clear.

The way Deus ex machina discribed things, whenever there was something wrong, it took years to get it fixed.
I also original misunderstood the fact that the RTS Starter Kit will run with version 1.3, you not absolutely needing the 1.4 update to get things working. Thats what ticked me off for a time, so you might want to skip the first two pages of the Torque game page rant, and just read the final conclusion for that topic, if it catches your eye at all.
Yep. A lot of chaos and criticism, but in the end, it all gets worked out. And with only the occassional obscene lunatic outburst by me. ;)
Anyway, I look forward to seeing the complete RTS Starter Kit 1.4, including all the user made things about. I believe we all want to make the best game we can, as quickly as possible, with as little personal effort as possible, so its best to use the code others have done, to save us some time. :)

Dedicated server now runs properly
Fixed networking issues with Explosions (they weren't ticking or cleaning themselves up properly in client-only situation)

I modified the page to make it difficult to miss.
Ah, dedicated server that explains it - we do a lot of heavy multiplayer work here and never had a problem. Thats running against clients hosting servers, not dedicated servers.

There is an entire section explaining the 1.4.2 -vs- 1.5 thing (that was added on August 26).I modified the page to make it difficult to miss.

No mention of when it is coming out though.
A month, two months, three months, four?
I'm sure others have asked that a lot everywhere.
By releasing it in stages as it develops, specifically the important bug fixes that have been completed, that'd help a lot of people.
"We acknowledge the problems you are having do exist, and we have a fix for them that works perfectly. You'll just have to wait a few months to get it, even though its completed."
"But why?"
"Because we're evil! HA HA HA HA HA HA!"
"Seriously, why do you do things this way?"
"We have our reasons," the answer comes back, the GG employee trying to convey an aura of mystery, while covering up the fact he doesn't know himself. ;)
