What games on the games page are made with Torque? And how much?
by Wolf Dreamer · in Torque Game Engine · 09/21/2006 (10:30 am) · 48 replies
List of popular games they sell can be found by clicking here.
Were any of these games made entirely with Torque?
Can an entire game be made with the Torque engine, or does Torque just give you a headstart, you then having to do the rest yourself?
Tribal Trouble was made entirely in java, no Torque at all. What other games on that list have no Garage Games products used in their making?
Minions of Mirth is listed as the type of game one can make with the Torque gaming engine, but a lot of its coding was done with something else.
I'm just curious what was made with what.

Can anyone give me an example of a commercially sucessful game of each type listed that has been released, which used the Torque Development Platform? I see 9 catagories mentioned, plus "pretty much every other genre".

COMMERCIAL GAMES
The Torque Development Platform has been used in the creation of numerous award winning commercially successful games. Torque technologies have powered games ranging from Starship Troopers to Trophy Hunting and from Tribes 2 to Minions of Mirth. Torque is not a one-hit/genre wonder either, with games ranging from FPS, RTS, RPG, Racing, Flight Simulators, Puzzle games, Adventure, MMOs, MMO-RTS-FPS-RPG and pretty much every other genre have been released using the Torque Development Platform. Torque is a battle-tested and proven technology that even the most demanding game and studio can rely on and succeed.

Puzzle Poker (TGB)
Produce Panic
RocketBowl (mentioned above, just thought I'd add that it used an external physics engine, ODE I believe)
Not sure about the others.

For instance, in Flight Simulators, Air Ace is a good example, though not yet released.
I'm not sure what you're trying to prove here, if it's your curiosity maybe you will be better rewarded if you try doing some of the research yourself?

Not all of the genre's they mention have actually had games released, so you can't say they're commercially successful yet. However, all the game types are possible if someone has the knowledge to use the engine. For instance, in Flight Simulators, Air Ace is a good example, though not yet released.

And how would I do research myself? They don't have a large list anywhere on their site listing all the commercially sucessful games made with their products, so I'm posting here to see what everyone knows. I googled around, but didn't find anything elsewhere on the net.

We do not have a comprehensive list. You have had several instances where you seem upset with GarageGames. If you have a specific problem with our company, we would be happy to take it up with you in private email, on the phone, or how ever you see fit.

There have been game published in all of those areas. On our front Game Store page only BCS, Gish, Tribabl Trouble and Robot Battle are not TGE games. Those are by far not the only Torque games on the market. In fact, there is not even a way for us to know all of the TGE games in existence. We do not have a comprehensive list. In the past I have posted questions, because I want information, and am irritated its not clearly listed on the website.
If I have a legitimate complaint or question, I post it, and we discuse it.
I have criticized you on the past for certain things, as have others, but only when I see something wrong or rediculous. I'm sorry that I lack the skills to word things more diplomatically. Not trying to wound anyone's ego here.
---
You say out of the 15 games listed in your game store page, the other 11 are made with Torque. Just checking.
I've made games with other things before, and then after a significant amount of development on my part, I find they lag up, and I have to abandon them. Thats why I want to be certain that it is possible to make a game that runs at a decent speed, with TGE. I'll go to the games page now, and download some demos of the 11 games I know are made with it now.
I am curious as to how many of those are made ENTIRELY with TGE scripts, and if any had to get code from an outside source. The Torgue Game Engine seems to have very nice server and network code on its own, that a key selling point for me, and compiles cleanly. I'm curious about the other aspects of the game though.
If I see a demo of a game that you tell me is made 100% with Torque, then I know if I work hard enough, I have a chance to make a game that runs as well as it does. I don't want to spend months on something like I did with an interface between Game Maker and the open source Irrlicht, only to hit a dead end once things really started taking form.
And you really need to take those 4 games on the list, and put a note that they are released by you, but were made with something else.

The demo is free, and gives you everything except the engine source code. So why not download it and see just how far you can get with script changes? If you run into a bump, I'm sure someone will be able to point you in the right direction and let you know if what you need requires an engine change.

I did this after downloading the demo for Tribal Trouble, and incorrectly assuming it was made with these products. Thus the nature of my complaint.
I found someone else on the Torque forum who made the same mistake as I did.
Thus I'm posting here in the public forums, for everyone considering this engine to see.

I want to make a real time strategy game. Can you mention one complete one made entirely with Torque that has been finished?
You can't claim they exist on your website, without backing up that claim by mentioning at least one.
Those posting on the RTS Starter Kit forum seem overwhelming disappointed with their purchase, and some tell me there that you can't make a complete game that runs smoothly.
Torque 1.5 list certain problems they mentioned, which are going to be fixed. No mention of when that is going to be released though. One of your employees and a guy were argueing about that over at my Game Maker's forum.
Anyway, back on topic. Can you list a single complete RTS that was made with the Torque Game Engine.

I am pretty sure that the vast majority of the games listed as well as from other sources have had a number of core engine changes. Depending on your design, you will have to get your hands dirty. Sometimes it will be a small change and at others you will be using the surgcal precision of a machete. Again, it depends on your design and how far it deviates from the core functionality of the engine as it sits. For my last couple of prototypes, I used Blitz3D because I would have had to make some rather hefty changes to the engine to even prototype the projects. Once I prototyped the ideas and discovered them to be non-intuitive or not-that-fun or simply not fun enough for the time commitment, I knew whether or not I wanted to incorporate them into the engine for Mac/PC release. If I had created the functionality in the engine, it would have been a significant time-sink for a simple test. But for my ideas for top-down Contra-styled shooters, third-person adventures, etc core TGE (plus advanced camera resource) has worked extremely well for testing.Quote:And you really need to take those 4 games on the list, and put a note that they are released by you, but were made with something else. That would only be helpful to a handful of developers as opposed to game players that do not care what engines the games were created in. They want fun games. They don't care if it leverages "AAA Torque Engine technology" because that is useless knowledge to most gamers looking at the indie market--and most gamers that look at any market, actually. One might get excited by a game because it uses the Unreal engine, but that doesn't mean it will be a good game or use the engine features well. I understand why you find it necessary from your perspective of research, but it doesn't matter from the perspective of someone who is reading a product page to buy a game.

Thank you for the suggestion, but no, we do not need to do this. Nowhere do we claim that the games sold on this site were made with Torque. If you read that somewhere here or elsewhere, please let us know where so we can remedy that situation.
The TGE pages are getting a makeover though, which should help, both in general and with your specific case. There will be a games page similar to the TGB Games page which will list games that are/were, as far as we know, made 100% with Torque.
Whether or not they were made 100% with TorqueScript, or whether there was some C++ source modifications involved, is probably a better question for the developer, rather than for us.

Also, from the Tribal Trouble product page (under "About Oddlabs"):Quote:Tribal Trouble is our first title and is based on our own cross platform game engine written completely in Java. We are a major contributor to the open source Light Weight Java Game Library project (www.lwjgl.org) which allows for fully hardware accelerated 3D graphics and sound in Java.

That's the point, you have no right to complain. It was your mistake, not anyone else's. If you would had spent 10 minutes reading Tribal Troubles product page, you would had found out that they do not use Torque for their game.

The Domination by Collaboration project for the RTS kit was pretty damn sweet, though.
09/21/2006 (1:33 pm)
I think that one of the main things that many people who purchased the RTS kit were disappointed with was that it was not their vision of their RTS game framework. It provided a nice chunk of functionality to get up and running quicking in TGE. It did not provide, however, specifics which people expected. I have used a large chunk of the camera system for other things, though I use the advanced camera resource more. I have also used the lobby code and the selection code for different things. It has been a while, though. And I stopped using it with the release of 1.4 because the changes were so significant that my little diff couldn't keep up. It was ported by the community, though. The Domination by Collaboration project for the RTS kit was pretty damn sweet, though.

Your download page for the game demos isn't working at all. I'll try out Wildlife Tycoon as soon as the download page is working again. Thanks Matt Huston. I just need one game made with it to look through, to make certain its possible to achieve what I want.

As for the Garage Games staff, what about an example for the other types of games listed? Really now. You can't make claims without backing them up. You mention 9 differant catagories, but only list 11 games made with Torque engine on that page.

You click on Downloads, and then Game Demos to see what kind of games this engine can be used to make. Thats a mistake many people make.
http://www.garagegames.com/demos/browse/game/
It list the games, and lets you download and play the demos, but does not provide you with the information you can find if you get to the demos from the other page someone quoted from.
So many people like myself jumped to an incorrect assumption, not bothering to look around other pages on the site for any more information.

Like David, I am using the RTS camera for a game I am developing, although it is actually turn-based, the RTS-SKs solution is flexible for a variety of different types of games.
A MMO-RTS-FPS-RPG is a huge undertaking so probably one of those that has a commercial license (as discussed earlier) and never states uses the Torque engine.
09/21/2006 (1:46 pm)
No problem Wolf. I believe, though don't quote me on it, that Wildlife Tycoon did use some elements from the RTS-SK. And as David said, I think people expected the RTS-SK to do more than it was meant to do. It is a merely a backbone and is a starting point for a variety of RTSs. No one can make a end-all solution for making the RTS of your dreams. Let's remember that RTS is a large genre, you have RTS's that are like Command & Conquer, you have RTS that are like The Sims, and these are both very different conceptions of what a RTS is. But they are both "Real-Time" and "Strategy".Like David, I am using the RTS camera for a game I am developing, although it is actually turn-based, the RTS-SKs solution is flexible for a variety of different types of games.
