Is game development going stale?

Wow, looking for a good game company to work for really opens your eyes.

I think I am pretty informed about the industry in general, but even I'm surprised how low things have gotten in the industry.

I took a look at the jobs section in gamasutra, and its just unbelievable, there are so few companies that even seem to have anything to attract me, they are either money chasing (usually publisher funded) or ego tripping (i.e. the owner made a good game 10 years ago and is still living off its good will).

What I want to know is.. where is the spirit? has it all been PR'd and Marketed out? are we all destined to be corporate minions for sony or microsoft?

Here is a great qoute from a friends email....

"It never seems that much to ask for but I want an innovative PC multiplayer-focused non-corporate small-company atmosphere that is well-funded, has great production values, good management, in an urban environment and develops in C++. That can't be too much to ask for...is it? :) "

Well, after doing some research, its pretty damn well impossible to find! :(

I'm just glad that there are one or two companies that ARE like that, but sadly, they arent recruiting.

Phil.

Amen brother. I turned down a position at a game company in 1998 because of similar reasons. #1 was the pay, I wasn't willing to take a $10k pay cut to work in the "cool" environment. They were confused over the fact that not only did I want to design, but program as well and that I wasn't particularly interested in developing a cutting edge 3D engine.
Too bad you are not a US citizen. I could use someone like you in not only the title that I am currently developing (no funding yet though - it is all sweat equity!), but also some of the virtual environemt stuff that I am doing for the Navy/Marines/Army (talk about massively multi-player :) )!
