@Mathieu

Im what some would call a "goth" and does that mean im gonna go shoot up some place? I mean come on as soon as columbine happened it was videogames and marilyn manson to blame (according to some people - watch bowling for columbine). Its such a retarded statement to make when some of the nicest people i know are goth and/or players of games. I dont just hang around goths exclusively either so its not a narrow minded statement.

Its just ignorant people that make these statements (like its goths to blame) and mental people that do sick things (like shootings).

If we are going to blame someone, let's blame his parents.

I know, I know I am gonna get flamed to death for that.
Bring it on!

Does anyone have any idea how many other people are playing the same game, have not massacred their college classmates yet...

not taking any sides, one way or the other... just curious as to the numbers...

Games are only getting the blame ever since people found out that movies and KMFDM are both covered by the First Ammendment and that any sane person has complete self control against most audible and visual outside influences (Unless the have Asperger's or something). That and movie studios paying a huge amount of tax. It's a conspiracy I tells ta! =P.
It's to avoid the "He was unstable and not getting enough attention from the school/parents/state/workmates/girlfriend/specialist/family for them to notice" thing imo, trying to sensationalise it. Next it'll be mobile phones ;) After that they'll probably blame the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Reel Big Fish.

Quote:Games are only getting the blame ever ...

No, games are getting the blame because so many reward the player for violent behavior.

And movies don't?

Can you play in a movie?

In movies the Hero or Heroine are often rewarded for performing illegal or dangerous acts.
Blade, Star Wars, Enemy at the Gates, A History of Violence, etc.
The impact is increased on the veiwer much more than a game as they are forced to be witness of the violence, in a game the player is only subject to how violent they control the charcter to be.

Mincetro, you don't understand the reward system. Your argument is also wrong, in that with movies there's an extra level of separation--you're never the one pulling the trigger.

Nonetheless, all of you who have gotten so defensive so quickly might take a step back and take a deep breath.

It's hardly been 24 hours and rather than approach it logically, we knee jerk and play like we're the victims. We're not. Those people were. And what's even worse, as I pointed out before, the game's not getting blamed and by this thread one would think it was the sole reason.

Yeah, totally not trying to just voice my own opinion without being targeted directly.

@Mathieu Goths arent like that (At least most of them that Ive met, that guy Is obviously mental), most of my friends are what you would call "goth" and none of them would do anything like this.

Now are we talking Jhonen Vasquez goth, or Freud goth?

Oh, and by the way - the police stopped another Columbine copycat in Greenbay. They probably played Serious Sam or Duke Nukem.

Sorry Mincetro, I wasn't intentionally trying to attack you.

I think we've become a knee-jerk society. There could be a mad uproar and all games and toy guns (or real guns) be outlawed. On the other hand, we might be making much adieu over nothing, and indeed adding more focus to games.

I certainly respect Jay Barson and other game makers' opinions, here. I just wish we'd give things a little more breathing room. :)

[quote]in that with movies there's an extra level of separation--you're never the one pulling the trigger. [/qoute]

I haven't pulled a trigger for a couple weeks, clicked the mouse quite a bit. Mouse clicking can't compare to dropping a deer or turkey. Doesn't compare to paintball or airsoft. Clicking is...well....it's clicking.

A deer head or antlers and some veal are far greater rewards than "woohoo! you scored 21,467 points!" or "woohoo you blew up a bunch of squares that look like a person!"

Incorporal rewards have no value.

About the media blaming games, they're the media. You let them own you.

Because you get no joy in playing video games, whatsoever ... especially after taking down someone with a headshot.

ETA: Note I haven't even taken the position it's the games fault. For that matter, NO ONE that I know of has.

@Mathieu Marquis-Bolduc

Blame Goth culture? You are an idiot.
Nothing is at blame except the killer himself

Sheesh, some people are jumpy here. While some of my friends are goth too and very nice, I dont think goth culture in general encourage an healthy mind. Thats MY opinion, regarless of its truthfulness, and I am entilted to my opinion thank you. I never insulted or intented to insult anyone personally here, so be kind, and do the same thing.

edit:
Mr. Hielema, Im not gonna hold my breath for an apology, but I would appreciate if you would at least erase those distasteful comments on my intellectual abilities.
