TileMap "select" tool purpose?

What's the purpose of the "select" tool when editing a tileMap? (The one that looks like an arrow.) I tried selecting a bunch of tiles, then checking/unchecking the Collision checkbox, but this fails to have any affect. It seems like it should (and would be useful if it did.) Is this a bug? Or is the select tool intended to be used some other way?

D'oh. Nevermind. Just saw in the TileMap tutorial that you then have to hit the "Apply to Selection" button for any changes to happen to your selection.
