medieval-fantasy futuristic weapons in RW?

by Ben "Djaggernaut" Chavigner · in General Discussion · 05/06/2002 (2:59 pm) · 9 replies

What are we going to make for weapons??
Like in Warhammer 4K... Fantasy world with guns... or only medieval weapons (with heavy metal style)
Just to know...

Its a fantasy based RPG, so fantasy style. No guns AFAIK.

Need bow still.. that'd be quite nice.

Also, warhammers, large axes, large swords.

How bout MAGIC for RW, I'd hate the particle system to go to waste :-)

Magic will be in it too.

I wouldn't mind a few items of a more "fantasy" nature rather then pure midevil mixed in. Just as long as they maintain a strong "archiac" and "primitive" ambeince.

No "Gattling Plasma Assualt Cannons" mind you, but "bombs" and "rapid dart throwers" or even more bizarre stuff like a enchanted Lightning Rod wouldnt be frowned apon from my end.

Ha, do you remember Quake 1. That was originally going to be a fantasy game. They added the Rocket Launcher, and that was the end of that.

To be honest I'd prefer purely fantasy weaponry, and magic. Nothing even remotely technological beyond perhaps a cross bow.

We already have a crossbow that fires explosive bolts...

I did think that odd. I suppose it could always be edited to burn instead of explode, but thats an idea for a later date.

all this destruction ..
I say that maybe the weapons could take on some defensive characteristics ..
maybe team defense or radius based stuff.

try to push the whole atmosphere into less killing more trying to keep alive .. this is something very few if any 3d fps has done.
(no i dont mean a medic with insta heal or a paladin with defense aura)

as well creation and transportation would be ultimate in a fps ..
imagine, guy with carpet will travel.

Ah... magic carpet :) Classic.

Trying to make a game defensive is a bit self defeating isn't it? Everyone joins the game and hides in the darkest part of the map as soon as they can.

The best 'defensive' game i've ever played is the 'survivor' mode from AvP2. For those that havn't played it, everyone starts as marines and the first person tags (read kills) someone else. And from that moment on it's the alien (the mutated dead guy) vs the rest, and as he kills them they swap sides. And points are earnt for surviving. That way people don't directly pick an attack / defensive roles. But apart from the start there is a very strong defensive element.

I notice that defensive weapons are just really turning up in the newer FPS. Unreal 2003 as the shield as does gore. Elite force had a portable force screen that was quite good. But it would be nice to eventually have a portable fortress :)

In realm wars context I was thinking maybe a standard bearer or something? Anyone that is in the vacinity / can see the banner gets a boost to their stats. But the guy carrying it effectivly has a bullseye painted on him, so defense is the way to go :)
