OK i want to learn to program my own MMORPG. I have been looking at Torque as the language to start learning. But im a little concerned that since i dont know much about programming that im going to go in the wrong direction from the start i want to be on track to learning what i need to know not learning what i wish i didnt need to know.

In other words if 3d studio max is better then maya for mmorpg style of grafix then can you shine the light on me about the software and why you say its the BEST!

SInce i cant afford to go to collage i have to buy books and learn at home. What are all the key areas i need to research and what programs on the market will i need to have and know how to use?

I just spent like 5 hours at garage games and amazon.com looking at all the books there and became overwhelmed... PLEASE HELP

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME

@Brian

I suggest that instead of trying to program an MMORPG from scratch, that you buy Neverwinter Nights(or in a couple months Neverwinter Nights 2) and mod your own MMORPG with that game. Listen to me carefully here... DO NOT TRY TO MAKE AN MMORPG FROM SCRATCH, ESPECIALLY NOT USING TORQUE. You will fail utterly and ruin the chance for whatever brilliant MMORPG is inside of you getting out. You need to start by modding a multiplayer RPG. TRUST ME ON THIS.

Don't listen to anyone else hear who trys to tell you that you can do it with Torque just because the guys who made Minions of Mirth with Torque did it. They were experienced professionals and knew what they were doing. And don't listen to the guys who laugh at you and make fun of you for wanting to make an MMORPG of your own. They weren't smart enough to listen to advice and they tried and failed and now they are bitter and make fun of people who say they want to try.

Go out and buy Neverwinter Nights for $20 at the store and get to the website and you will learn all about how to make an multiplayer rpg. Then when you have done that... when you have made your own mutliplayer rpg with another game... then you will start to know what you need to know to make your own. Trust me on this. You can listen to me and suceed one day or be bullheaded and in a hurry and ignore me and be like the rest who after a few months not only gave up on making an MMORPG, but on making games period.

There are a ton of great MMORPGs that will never see the light of day because the people who wanted to make them wouldn't be smart. I know that you can learn to make an MMORPG if you learn to make mods with Neverwinter Nights(or Neverwinter Nights 2). Do that, and you have a real chance to succeed. Don't do it and add your name to the growing list of game developers who burned out before they ever really began.

Then, when all that is said and done, then you can think about coming back to Torque and giving your own a try from scratch.

Torque is not a language.
There's no such thing as MMORPG grafix, it depends on the design.

Other than that, I agree with Anton. Start small, and you might reach your dream.

Hey anton thanks for the great advice. Today before i read this post i had went down to the local barnes and noble book store and purchased 3 new books and asked a man who was also looking at programming books. Turns out he advized me to start with a book Beginning C++ game programming written by michael dawson. I already started reading it and with in the 1st hour i had my compiler installed and displayed my words on my screen. Not an amazing achievement to someone who can write the code with there eyes closed but i was very proud of my success knowing nothing about programming in C++. I also have purchased the garage games title torque and i havent even opened it yet. The introduction to the C++ book was explaining that 90% of all games on the market are written in C++ . So I found out that torque is a program made out of c++ and although i have to compile to test it in the end result i will have more direct communications with the heart of my PC. But your absolutely right about doing the mod. I tried to mod a game i love dearly called battlefield 2, and had ended up needing to uninstall my game and re-install it. They have their own mod engine as well inplimented for map editing and what not so i have no idea where i went wrong.

OK so i made it this far, i found out that i need to start learning C++ and so i started.. The last title i also purchased was 3D game programming all in one by kenneth finney. This book is loaded with A LOT of recourcefull information

Now that i feal i have the tools to get me started can i ask you what you use for modeling and mods like making skins and making terrains. Is there a product out there that is superior like C++ that has an edge over everything else. My books are talking about milk shape which i know nothing about yet havent got that far.. But based off my research which is only probably as good as the advertising im reading i thought 3d studio max and maya had the lead. can i focus learning and getting skilled in one program that is a do it all program or am i going to have to learn milkshape 3dstudio and maya ect.. all these to get great results.

Thanks for your time.

Also i wanted to share a web site he gave me to check out. He was unfamilar with garage games but he reccomended me to GameDev.net I just started looking at it but it looks very nice.

Try something called RealmCrafter $50 for logic and a scripting language, more if you want the source. When I originally was going to make a MMORPG, I was gonna buy it, but plans changed.
