Strange Torque Exception with Map - portal probs?

This one's got me stumped...
Using TGE 1.4, TLK and Quark...
I have a map of a multi story building with 3 floors complete (3 not complete) done in Quark.
In the map I've created a chair which I've copied around the 1st floor no probs.
On the ground floor however I"ve copied the chair in about 4 rooms no worries, but when I copy into another 2 rooms Torque throws an exception whislt loading the map. It doesn't matter if its detailed on the floor or floating in the middle of the room. It's also happened with 2 desks that I've copied into the same rooms. (The rooms do contain other stuff that seems to be ok)
The only thing at this stage I can think of is that the ground floor is not fully portaled, it's only portaled to the outside world.
I will portal the ground floor to see if this fixes the prob.
THE QUESTIONS ARE:
Is there a limit to how many polys can be in an unportaled area in Torque? (The Quark map has a total of about 22,000 surfaces)
Has anyone else had an problem similar?

I've placed about a dozen chairs that work fine. On the 1st floor they are detailed, sitting on the floor, on the ground floor they are not detailed floating above the floor. It's only when I place them in the 2 offending rooms on the ground floor that there is a problem - here I've tried them both as detail and as floating....

Problem fixed - I just needed to use map2dif_plus.

The actual error that I'm getting from Torque is a "Bad Memory exception ... Memory at [whatever] cannot be read". As though it's trying to access an unitialised object or read an array out of bounds.
I"ve decided to put something else in offending rooms and it works ok for the moment.
Does anyone know if there is a maxumim number of textures (either in number or MBs) that can be in 1 DIF?

Well, the problem seems to have re-manifested itself even with map2dif_plus and I've even portalled all the rooms on the ground floor. The actual error that I'm getting from Torque is a "Bad Memory exception ... Memory at [whatever] cannot be read".
