TGB and making UO style game....

by John Spivey · in Torque Game Builder · 09/01/2006 (10:04 pm) · 8 replies

I am very interested in the TGB. I saw the new content pack that gives the fantasy aspect and immediatly thought of Ultima Online. I love that game and would LOVE to make something similar. I read though that networking code is not standard with the TGB. Is this true. If I could not make a game that was multiplayer in that respect I am not sure the endevor would be worth the effort. Especially when I could do something similar with the RTS pack. Something about 2D and remembering how much I LOVED Ultima Online made me think to ask this question. So any comments would be greatly helpfull.

Thanks

@John, from my understanding the networking in TGB is capable of doing multiplayer gaming, but perhaps not to the extent of handling a bunch of connections at once and doing real-time updates for positions, etc (more like a board game 'take your turn' networking).

However, with the pro license, and a decent C++ coder, you could easily integrate a better networking layer into the engine -- I believe with a little time, there may be resources available on TDN to show just how to do that as well (if they don't exist already).

Thanks for the info. But as many that use torque..... I am just the artist. Coding on that level that you would consider "decent" is beyond my scope. I have tried to compile TGE just to see if I could and i have yet to get it done. Thanks for the info though.

@John,

reinerstileset.4players.de/englisch.htm

Give that a look see, see if UO memories don't pop back up again ... all free for game development, totally twisted archive of great looking 2d sprites with an isometric look.

@Rune, I actually found that site by looking for "RPG Maker" sites, almost all of the RPG Maker sites have tile sets for both characters, ground tiles, buildings, fight scenes, etc ... All of the graphics are designed to work specifically with RPG Maker, but modifying them or modifying TGB to work with them, should not be too complicated -- I figured RPG Maker fan sites would be a good place to look for graphics like that, since I was hoping to make something similiar to Aveyond with TGB ...
