I saw the plug too, that was very cool. Out of curiosity, how does one sign up for the closed beta of Torque X?

Go to Torque X product page. And enter your email address in the Beta List / News form. (Located on the right side bar)

Crap. I have to install C# Express even though I have Professional. Time to cruise their forums to see if there's a work-around.

I'll second Michael's question. I'd like to use TorqueX as a quick prototype tool, then port to TSE or TGB if I need to go cross platform... What features of TGB, TSE will be in TorqueX in the beta & final?

I'm dying to get my hands on the Torque X Engine. Have a game that was half written in Managed DirectX that I intend to convert to Torque X as soon as I can, it looks awesome!

I too have run into this problem, and i'm afriad to install C# express side by side with pro, i know that with my luck i'll have to re-install EVERYTHING if i do that. has anyone found a work around?

They install side-by-side just fine. I use Pro at work and installed Express next to it with absolutely no problems.

Is this TorqueX? If so, things look very different from all the script files I've come accustomed to. Once I get my head wrapped around this thing though I believe its going to be awesome!

I installed C# Express along w/ VS 7 for something else and it seems to work fine, but I haven't tryed everything...
Also, this may be a good place/time to do a little plug for a new MS site CodePlex. Its their answer to SourceForge, and it uses TFS. You can also download a client version of TFS if needed. My girlfriend works on that team, so take a look and submit your project if you are interested.
Thanks to everyone who worked on this and mucho kudos again!

@John Tripodo
This beta is not TorqueX. TorqueX is designed with this framework in mind and an easy-entry point for Torque development via XNA.

I'll just use it on my Vaio. I would rather not run the chance of a shared registry and such between two versions of the same product with different features that I use everyday. I have nightmares about such things at work, and usually professors make them come true.@John Tripodo

Again, I think you guys are all worrying too much about Express and Pro not working together. Microsoft has a pretty good track record with versions of Visual Studio working together without conflict. Visual Studio 6, Visual Studio 2003, Visual Studio 2005 Pro, and now, Visual Studio Express are all on my system without issue.

Unless of course your talking about re-opening saved project files :)

I have supported computer labs with Visual Studio 6, 2003, and 2005 installed and have had major pains. There is a reason that the professional version of 2005 recommends that you uninstall 2003. Perhaps they work for you with incident, but on over 800 computers being put through their paces constantly with programming classes using different versions, I have noticed that registries get munged pretty regularly. Luckily this semester we only have 2005, and have had none of the problems we have seen previously.

On another note, in case anyone here needs to know it... XNA doesn't work with x64, so you HAVE to set your project to compile for x86 instead of the default "Any CPU." I haven't had a chance to test this out, waiting to get home and try it.
I've got an exe-packer (MuCruncher2) ready to roll out tonight as soon as I make sure it works properly with XNA, but it is a .net and XNA capable (only, in fact, no PE) exe-packer that decrunchers to memory and executes from it. I'll post here with a link to that once I get it posted. Probably be a couple of days before the link is actually active, since scene.org tends to take about 24 hours to validate files. It achieves on average about 50-60% compression on your executables.
David - It's worth pointing out that the differences between 2k3 and 2k5 are much greater than between Express and Pro of 2k5. Also, I've been running 2k3 and 2k5 on the same box for a year with no issues at all.

Apparently the only thing that you need Express for is to build for the 360, the rest of it can be done in Pro. According to what I read, you can even poke around in the distro to pull out the templates and stuff so you can create your SpaceWar project in Pro. heh.On another note, in case anyone here needs to know it... That is true, but since I deal with problems that arise weekly (and yes, many of them are students or professors that deal with the incorrect version and release solution files or attempt the code conversion without checking it, there have been other, non-user issues). The XNA installer requires Express to install, but from reading Professional can be used. I just hate munging my registry with further bloat only to remove the bloat to use the package I paid for...without worrying about the consequinces.

TorqueX is still in development, and is expected to be released later this year.
08/30/2006 (3:12 pm)
Quick note: No, this is not TorqueX. TorqueX sits on top of the XNA framework at a higher level--very much like Torque sits on top of C++/various libs to let you focus on making games instead of low level rendering, object management, etc.TorqueX is still in development, and is expected to be released later this year.
