In-world dynamic text?

I ran a search on this (boy do we need forum-specific search) and got a few results for hacks to in-game text that's not via the gui builder. There was also a quote from Melv here www.garagegames.com/mg/forums/result.thread.php?qt=27033 saying he was going to be adding in-world text capabilities.
Was this ever added? I don't see anything relevant within the docs to doing this. I'm just adding some fairly typical point popups at the location of the piece when they are activated/destroyed.

Sprites are definetily a "no go" for an RPG or an adventure game.
