Looking for a video tool recommendation

by Kevin Ryan · in General Discussion · 08/21/2006 (6:32 pm) · 5 replies

I just edited my last plan to add a link to a video. I used the very old Adobe Premiere 5.1 to create the video. Can anyone recommend a new tool to create and/or convert between different video types? Also what is the current best video type (as far as compression/quality ratio and also something that'll run on everyones computer) to use? WMV?

I'm not going to be creating videos everyday day, but realized that when I discuss my camera system some supporting videos would be useful.

Kevin,

Virtual Dub is one option. It doesn't have super high-end features, but it does a very good job. It's GPL'd and free so you can't beat the price. Here's a link . . .

As a side note, Torque has a built-in video capture feature that rapidly snags a series of screenshots at whatever framerate you specify and saves them in either PNG or JPG formats. You can use it instead of Fraps for your Torque-powered games. Kirk Haynes pointed it out and posted a bug fix for it in this thread a few weeks ago. Once you've snagged all your frames, you can then load them up into Virtual Dub and compile them into a single AVI file, add sounds, apply compression, etc.

Thanks Aaron, I'll download it and check it out.

I love Premiere and Final Cut Pro. I know people who also love Vegas. You might also want to check out Avid Express, the low-end version of an industry standard.

I would recommend MPEG-3 or 4 for a video format since it can be used on any the "big three" OS's without any special codecs.

Kevin,

I use the Adobe Production Suite (7 dvd's) for the Video editing I do, but for what you want Adobe Primiere (the one targeted for home use) is a VERY good product.

As to formats I would publish in MPEG-2. It is DVD standard and I am pretty sure there are some toasters and fridges that understand it.

I use Macromedia MX 04 and fraps.
