Non-Violent Games

by Infinitum3D · in Jobs · 08/11/2006 (2:12 pm) · 4 replies

Is anyone interested in programming Non-Violent Games focusing on a younger audience. I have a five year old son who loves role-playing games, but I don't want him exposed to excessive gore/killing. I'd like to develop a game focusing on strategy/role-playing with a scavenger hunt/mystery theme.

or even something like Disney's ToonTown where the "badguy" is a robot and the "weapons" are non-lethal.

Any suggestions or help?

I seem to recall that the Harvest Moon series managed to be an RPG that is completely non-violent (because, IMO, ToonTown just couches the violence - but it is still violence). The real thing to do is sort out what kind of activities the target audience is likely to enjoy and determine how to deliver that in a fun RPG format. If memory serves, Harvest Moon puts the players in the role of a farmer. My daughter has played many of them and loved them, but I must admit that I haven't spent much time with any of the HMs myself.

Exactly, which is why I'd like to focus on a mystery with exploration/scavenger hunt as sideline themes.

I'd like to have others help me with this, since I'm a 3D artist not a programmer. Maybe I should have posted this in the team building forum?

Thanks for the Harvest Moon suggestion. I'll look in to it.

There are some projects in the works now that are non-violent. While developing Vespers 3D Mike Rubin has uncovered a growing and thriving community of non-violent game users. I was skeptical at first but he's proven non-violent games can grab a share of the game market for their own.
