MapleStory

I've watched my kids play this game for hours.

I've put money into their paypal account as a direct result.

I cannot stop from wondering why this game is so popular.

I mean, the graphics are outstanding. Music is good.

But zero story. Zero missions.

Hack, slash, level, farm. Rinse and repeat.

Ok so maybe i dont get it but darn it I really want to make one ;)

There are quite a few side scrollers like MapleStory out there in the MMO arena that are making money through in store cash shops.

These games are massive in Asia and the market there is growing faster then here.

Anyone share the same thoughts/ideas on 2d games?

Being a Ragnarok Online addict, I totally understand the allure of these games. It's the entire basis of the Korean games market. Make games simple, make them persistent, and get people addicted. Even all the game s from other genres over there follow this model, like Gunbound, Gunz: The Duel, Shot Online, etc. Generally the strongest point of these games is their music and graphics, with the layer of persistence to give the players something to keep aspiring too. So... making a succesful game along those lines is pretty much a matter of how good an art team you have, and how good you are at digitalizing cocaine ;D.
