Beating a dead horse?

by Kim Ball · in General Discussion · 08/04/2006 (9:10 pm) · 21 replies

Remember this plan (www.garagegames.com/index.php?sec=mg&mod=resource&page=view&qid=7297)by Robert Brower from March 2005?

Quote:Gotta see a man about a horse!

There was a lot of interest in his horse pack, and it seemed things were moving forward. Mostly because of comments like this one Robert wrote in September:

Quote:I am moving forward with this. I submitted it to the good folks at GarageGames. They are as excited about it as me! But before I release it, I need to identify an artist who might be able to help with a final tweak. I need to fix a seam and gather a little more info on the hard work that Danny Ngan has done. We've spent far too long on it to release anything less than perfect. This person must have 3d studio max version 7. If anyone is interested, I will gladly contract you to help. My email address is in my profile. Thanks for your patience!

Robert

The pictures are all gone, but there is a video of the horse pack in this plan by Eric Elwell from Sept. 2005 (www.garagegames.com/blogs/17248/8750)?

Quote:Aha! I may have something interesting to show yet! One project that I was able to recover was the horse pack: www.thetextureguy.com/screenies/tstHorse3.wmv

^ This clip ^ shows my work as the texture artist. (It was a load of fun syncing the clips with the animation running ;) ) As a matter of fact, if you're interested in the pack, the video only covers the major textures, there are more.

An ingame clip:

Needless to say, I'm very excited about the future of this pack!

For nearly a year we heard that release was imminent, but now its been months since Robert has even logged on to the forums. Has anyone heard anything about the fate of the horse pack?

I know I'm not the only one very disappointed. And yes, I know there is another horse pack out there that works with Torque. I own it, but I don't think it compares (yet?) with what is in that movie.

Edited to add links...

Kim,

Thanks for bringing this back up. I too would love to see the horse pack become available. And I must say, the in-game vid of it looks better than some recent commercial horse implementations (Oblivion for example).

I'd be really interested in it as well. MyDreamRPG.com has a horse pack available, I wonder if it's related?

I've got Robert's IM address and he hadn't been online at all for months, until recently. I'll send him a message about this thread when I next see him online (whenever that'll be!)

@Aaron,
It is pretty nice, isn't it? The gaits are pretty good. The jump needs to be adjusted to take off a little sooner, and the neck straightened out and I'd be happy with it. It just has a nice overall feel to it based on what I see in that movie.

My understanding is that Danny Ngan is responsible for a significant part if not all of the animation. Are you there, Danny? Nice work!

@Rubes,
I got the mydreamRPG horse recently. I haven't had a lot of time to experiment with it, but it seems quite different than the vids above. I haven't been able to get it to walk, trot, canter and jump -- just to let the player ride it.

@Craig,
Wow! Is this a great community or what? Thank you.

Too bad, the horse in that video looks really nicely done. I'd love to be able to use it.

Nice horse...but my impression is that the animation in the horse model referenced at the top of this thread is a little more polished.

It almost seems as if this was some cruel prank. Get everyone excited about a pack that people needed for a long time.. Have it more then good enough for release.. And then suddenly leave without a word. Makes me sad. :(

Not really.. the GG idea graveyard is chest deep...

Plus I think people just got on other projects....

Now help Arteria polish up there horse and all will be fine..

@Dreamer...hehe, I did recall something like that. I went to check it out on your site a little while back but there wasn't much info, so I tabled it and eventually forgot about it. I was going to e-mail you but I never got around to it. Can I still get it?

Yep just register on the site and then PM Tom this thread. He'll get you setup.

Regards,
Dreamer

p.s. To everyone concerned Rubes won a free Kit in one of our contests awhile back. He just never bothered to claim it.

The horse pack is more or less done. Documentation still needs to get finished, and a few tweaks before it goes through GG.
