Making 2D sprites

What's up. I am having trouble creating my own art work for my games. I am using Corel Painter IX and Adobe Illustrator. When draw the picture i want and save as a PNG file i get it in fine but i still has the white background that i made it on. How do i get rid of the background and have just the picture i made? I am more on the programmer side of things than the art so i am not very knowledgeable about these things.

I use photoshop, and it has the option to set the background as transparent. In Illustrator, find out how to make the background layer transparent, or when you create a new image, instead of starting with a black/white background, start with a transparent one.

When you create the images make sure they have a transparent background, and make sure you keep the transparency when you export as PNG.
