PLE exporter?

Forgive me if I seem out of place or behind the times here, but I am new to Torque and am still finding my way around the documentation and developer network, let alone the actual programs and whatnot...

Can I export from Maya PLE 7.0? The documentation says that the exporters don't support the PLE version, but they also talk about the older versions of Maya, which Alias doesn't even support anymore, so far as I know. So I'm rather hoping that things have changed since that was written.

If it is supported, I'll need to be directed to where I can download the exporter, get some directions on its use, etcetera. If it's not supported, then I'm pretty much up ****-creek without a paddle, and I would welcome any reccomendations for a modeling program that IS supported and DOES NOT cost some four-digit dollar amount, or better yet is free altogether.

(I mean seriously, who is even using this hundred-dollar engine and has the resources for a multi-grand modelling program?)

Blender is a well known free package with a very high learning curve... but the price is right. I am 3D Studio Max certified, and had too much trouble wrapping my head around Blender to actually learn - but your mileage may vary, plenty of other people use it successfully.

Alternatively, Milkshape is pretty popular and low cost (but not free) - and I understand it's learning curve isn't nearly as bad as Blender.

Regarding your final question - we bought into TGE initially because we were looking for something we could jump into quickly. I got my license two weeks ago yesterday, and am already very comfortable with the engine and managed to produce the prototype of our game in that two week period. (Again, your mileage may vary.) We could've afforded a more expensive engine, but at least for the prototype I didn't see much reason to spend extra when we didn't need to. I've been pretty impressed with the TGE, except the engine does show its age a bit... so we upgraded our license to the early adopter license of the TSE and I think we'll be quite happy with it. Sure, we could've afforded a fancier engine, but why spend money we don't have to?

(Oh... can't speak to the state of Maya tools, sorry...)
