by Andrew Lawson · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 07/12/2006 (6:41 am) · 17 replies

Just wondering if anyone wold be interested in making a chain link fence relatively tall with barbed wire at the top? Model will be used in a game. Thanks.

I agree that fence is exactly what I want but I posted this request in the freebie section so I could get the model for free. I only need the fence not the other stuff in that pack. I appreciate your help though. Thanks.

Ah. Didn't notice it was in the freebie section. Sorry.

It should be hard to make, though. Two poles, two polygons, and alpha'd textures for the fence and wire sections. Now making it look nice, that would depend on your artist.

Good luck.

That's ok! Yeah, the whole "making it look nice" that's what I struggle with. :)

@Andrew: Are you seriously considering working on a game, and at the same time do not have $24.95 to spare for the urban pack? How in the world did you save up enough for 3dsMax?

Because the equipment, software and any other expenses are funded by the investor and backed by a contract. Not sure that I have to go into detail about why I don't want to purchase the pack. If you could get it for free....wouldn't you?

I am not considering working on a game. I actually am.

Thanks for the feedback though, "Brokeback Mountain".

@Andrew,

BTW, you can buy the Urban Pack fence by itself here: www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/250527
And it's priced only 5 bucks more than the entire pack is priced here at GG.

Decent game content isn't cheap, nor should it be.

Once again, I understand I could buy it from a lot of other places. This forum is placed in the "freebie" zone. If I wanted to pay for it I would have posted in another forum. Thanks though.

Dude, it's awfully tacky, though, to ask for something for free when you are working on a commercial project... Especially something as cheap as $5.

The amount of time it would take me to create you a fence is worth more to me than the $5 you don't seem to think it's worth. Now, admittedly, it's a pretty easy thing and would probably take maybe 30 minutes to create... but 30 minutes of my time is worth no less than $15 to me. A free project is different, but if you are making money off of my work... then why would I do it for free?

You probably shouldn't have admitted that yours is a commercial project while trying to ask for free work from people, I'd be awful surprised to see you get any takers now... sorry, but that is the truth. What you have said is actually kind of offensive.

@Andrew: Actually, I make it a point to try and give more than I take in this world. Not just in time and money, but also in mercy and understanding. I get where you are coming from; I used to be the same way myself. If you need help with the fence, just email me. I rather enjoy helping out those who don't deserve it.. Mainly becuse that's what woke me up from my slumber years ago.

@Cliff
So can you explain to me where the fence is for $5.00??? Weston Tracy was not saying the fence was $5.00 he was saying the fence alone was 5 dollars more than the Urban pack. (total of $30.00)

You have no clue what you are talking about in my situation. I have a contract with an individual that understands that I am not a 3d artist. He does, however, understand that I am a developer. I am able, and have, bought many model packs for the game I am creating. I have purchased not only all the Arteria-gaming model packs through the membership but also Tim Aste's combo model pack.

I am limited in the money that the contract provides. Garagegames.com offers this "crazy" forum that has these "offensive" people post on to get free content. I have an idea...how about if you don't know the logistics of my contract then don't comment about what you do not know.

This freebie section is for those who offer up any free 3d models and may disclose their name for recognition if they choose. The people that post their free models are allowing you to use their models for FREE!!!!

Can't a guy just ask for a free fence around here without getting flamed? Heh. This thread is pretty silly.

@Weston: I was thinking the same thing myself! haha

@Andrew: Yes it is, send me an email to the address on my profile.

OK, I did misread the cost of the chain link fence. I apologize. Being unwilling to pay $5 for the chainlink fence is one thing, being unwilling to pay $30 for it is another.

Just throw in a place holder made from a dif/dts or something. If you end up actually needing a fence then pay someone to make one later that matches your style. My biggest concern with content packs is that if you are creating an original game then they must match your game's style. I guess you can do that through textures once the style is chosen.

Thanks for the info Frank. You are right. I have run into the situation of certain models not exactly fitting what I had in mind and it's frustrating. But, fortunately weston tracy really came through for me. We worked out a deal and I will be using his fence from his urban pack. The fence is exactly what I had in mind and then some. I love it. Thanks.
