Edge of Midnight V5

Hello all, well i'm sold on the idea of the Torque + MMOkit, and in the coming days will be buying the engine + as many dohickies and dohades as is possible.

Input is welcome on this thread

The Game name is Edge of Midnight V5
V1 was a rom based mud
V2 an eos c based mud
V3 was a C++ mud
V4 is still alive and well with a large community java/mysql Txt based game.

Version 5, will be graphical, intensively roleplay and 2 parts scary 2 parts crazy and 2 parts naughty.
All of our players are verified adults.

All based around the simple premise of all EoM games that Pyros the ultimate god, can not die but can cease to exist through boredom, so a fractured part of his mind broke off and started creating worlds, mortals and such like to keep him occupied, even enemies etc all to keep him alive.
That is the fun world people live in.

My design plan is 30 max people per zone/mis

First zone will be the town of waygate, a nexus between a scifi world on one side and fantasy world on the other (should be pretty easy to create custom GUI's for each world from fantasy to scifi)

The idea is nexus/waygate is a mish mash of scifi and fantasy, you can start as a scifi person or fantasy, if your fantasy your abilities and magic work 100% in your own world, 50% in nexus, 25% in the oposite world. unless you hire an alchemist, enchanter or engineer
As in your spanky new buggy may be great for the wastelands of the scifi future but you aint going to do too well in the fantasy realm unless you hire an alchemist to enchant the buggy, same with your neat robe of flying which works well in the fantasy world, an engineer will haveto fit a jetpack and harness for Tek world travel.

Most of it is already planned tested and used in eom 1-4 so that is on our side, it will just be the jump to graphical dohickies that require hair falling out and greyness of roots.

(Realised that GG doesn't take paypal so sent my money from paypal to my bank should take till wednesday then I will buy the engine and kit)

What we will be aiming for is single player feel, as in to us its not the fancy graphics or uber mobs you need 20 people to kill, its the storyline and your involvement.

In games like morrowind and oblivion, GTA san andreas etc, both me and my wife longed for one thing, friends to experience it with, im not talking a MMORPG, im talking you feel part, you follow a storyline you own a house maybe, gain loot, furnishing, latest gun or item, alone or with others if you wish but mainly you meet up with the community at the local square or club, you take a few friends back to your house and show them your achievement, your all part of the same storyline and it doesn't matter how many hours you have how many minutes you can log on for, you matter and you feel it.

quality not quantity, thankfully we have 9 years of storyline, mobprogs (mobile programs ai scripts) to draw from.

One thing to realise this will be a limited release game, I am not in this for the making of money.

After 9 years of running the game we have a players charter (which is like the oposite of a EULA) if a EULA is a players agreement to play your game the players charter is your promise to them, this isn't commercially viable but when you have 20+ people on your game and a player base of 200+ who you mostly know by first name, who you brought some together and they got married both on your game and in real life, even one who I am godfather too there son, to me that kind of community is much more than $$ and is trully priceless, anyone who plays the game will haveto fit in with the idea of honesty and community, enforced through time and effort.

Having a background in C C++ and java self taught i'll be handling the coding (nice thing about the MMOKit is it does alot of it for me from research)
Scripting etc will be me, wife, and a couple of helpers in the community.

I am really biting at the gate waiting for wednesday :),

This is all for love lol, grey hair and all.

It is also a very important project for me, my wife became ill with cancer 9 years ago and the main reason I began EOM was to have a safe place for my wife to create and play, she is in forced remission but will get no better, (forced remission by drugs which in theory keep the cancer away cancer = ALL acute lymphoblastic leukeamia, drug = roferon alpha 2 b, but create long term side affects that slowly build up to worse) Now you probably understand why this game in all its forms is a driving force, for me, I am in forced retirement now primary carer for wife, which gives me alot of spare time to think which can be a good or bad thing.

Now help needed
The idea to limit 30 chars per zone should mean pretty high poly count Avatars, any ideas what should be an upper limit guideline we should set it too?

Money is VERY limited, $100 is actually a very big investment, + the $100 for the mmokit, its doable simply because niether of us drink or smoke, or go out partying, silly couple we prefer to be at home playing games lol.

We will need an Avatar/character pack, that will fit our needs, and scifi/fantasy packs to flesh out the zones.

Any ideas, suggestions please let me know, also I haveto say any help hasto be given freely, never going to make anything out of this except happyness and a community atleast for a very long time.

I also like the idea of the TSE + the Titas project But I want to keep the game to a graphical level where anyone in the community can play it without a uber fast gaming rig.

I would actually suggest given your description that you look at Minions of Mirth.

It's made with TGE, and has already implemented just about everything you've described--and it has a server license that is very inexpensive (last I remember is $25) that lets you host your own servers, create your own worlds, etc.

Josh Ritter put this product together pretty much specifically aimed at people like you (with your design goals), and I think it is absolutely something for you to look at--he's probably saved you 2-3 years of work with his product!

Sadly the MoM is not what we need, the source code is locked we could only modify maps, any code changes would be overwritten by the patcher each time connected.

So it looks like its back to original plan
buy Torque sdk on wednesday
then mmokit as soon as available
then TSE
then titas lol

I think I need a bank loan :P
