Kyro2 + D3D = Instant Reboot

by Bryan Buschmann · in General Discussion · 04/17/2002 (12:49 pm) · 1 replies

Running WinXP, 512mb RAM, Athlon XP 1700+, Kyro 2 (Prophet 4500/tvout). Any video mode loads and works in OpenGL (1280x1024 runs surprisingly fast). D3D will load for the menu screen on any screen resolution, the game will start loading and after loading the datablocks the game will hard reboot my machine with no errors, just an instantaneous full reboot. Latest drivers for all hardware.

I have not tried to recreate this error on the demo application or on Tribes 2 but will do so once I have some free time.

I believe the default for WinXP and Win2K is to write to a log and do an immediate reboot upon a kernal fault.

I generally find this to be a driver crash. It's not always the video driver either, even though it only happens in D3D. It could be driver interaction, or I've had MP3 rippers/players running in the background and only had certain crash/reboots happen with them running.

Now, it definitely COULD be the Kyro drivers -- I'm assuming you have the latest ones? Also, it would help if someone with a dev build could run in the debugger -- many times a crash that takes down the system will actually catch in the debugger earlier.
