A good trial-protection library?

by Adam Johnston · in Torque Game Builder · 06/27/2006 (2:57 pm) · 7 replies

Are somebody using a trial-protection commercial or free package?
I've seen many casual games usign a very common interface, for trial purpouses
and I'm guessing they are using a common library, I can play putting values in the reg,
in hidden files, but you know maybe this can be broken very easily because I'm not good in
craking techniques (or anticracking by the way) so... I searched in the
forums but nothing bumps, and I'm not planning to use Crypkey ($1000 per title)
Is there something for indies or casual games?

We use ASProtect. Easy to use and really reasonable price for a full license without any per-title costs.

Hi Tom! thank you. I'll give it a look.

EDIT:

Maybe are my configurations but I got an really noticeable slowdown
in my puzzle game. I bet is going to be unusable in my platformer game...

Also it only allows me to limit by use days or executions, I was thinking in something
like Big Fish's games have in their trials with a 30 minutes trial and direct access to
buy and insert key.

Wait... I'm guessing something like this a custom framework of the big boys out there...
Am I wrong?

Some portals have their own trial/protection software. Otherwise, many people use Armadillo. However, if you want to limit the minutes someone can play, I think you have to get the $300 pro version (not sure). Also keep in mind, that if you want to go on portals, you won't be able to use conflicting protection methods. You have to use theirs.

Hmm, I just ran across ShareGuard based on a recommendation. It's $50 (was $30 a year ago) and lets you limit the number of minutes someone can use the product. However, the wrapper is damn ugly. Supposedly, you can skin the wrapper, but the basic setup still seems pretty ugly to me. There's also the free Trial Creator which seems to do only do 30 day demos. Serial Shield costs around $100USD, and does quite a bit. It has a good feature list, but doesn't limit by minutes like you want.

EDIT:
I just checked the ShareGuard site. Despite what I was told, I can't see how you can limit the number of minutes used. Take a look:
