What tools are you using?

Currently, I am using Anim8or for modelling and DrawPlus4 for vector art. I am not really using 3D objects in my game. Indeed, I just pre-render the model. Anim8or is an excellent software for 3D art newbie like me. Not as powerful as Blender, but it is EXTREMELY easy for use. DrawPlus4 is also free. I am not good at drawing raster art. Manipulating those nodes make me feel more confident in finishing a work. But when I need to create a character with animation like running and jumping, DrawPlus4 is not quite suitable for that. I am looking for a vector editor (Free or at very low price) for creating my charaters. Anyway, what art tools are you using?

I use Toon Boom Studio, and moho. for animating. used pixen for a while, but it likes to crash often.

Ed Averill, what did you want to know about toon boom studio? If you do animation toon boom studio works great, reasonable priced . simple to use, It has a pretty fast learning curve. Moho on the other hand has a longer learning curve. But they both do two different things to make an animation. Moho basically is designed to take one drawing and animate it with bones. you can also sort of do this in toon boom if you use the peg feature. I prefer to draw the whole sequence out.

Pro Motion is very good for 256 colour artwork & animation. Anyone who used Deluxe Paint will feel right at home.

Obleo, I'm basically looking for a "pure 2D" package to do TGB (and other) artwork in. I've seen some pretty decent reviews of Toon Boom and was curious as to other peoples experiences. The price is certainly good, within my "indie" budget (self funding is painful, oh well).

I should see if there's a demo version and just download it and try it out. I'm going to check out Moho as well, now I'm curious! :-)

My only complaint about ToonBoom is that it requires you have QuickTime installed :(

We're using ZBrush for characters and sprites needing a higher level of quality.
Photoshop for lower level sprites and generic touching up of all assets.
Genetica Pro for tiles.

Has anyone ever tried using Ktoon located at https://developer.berlios.de/project/showfiles.php?group_id=2960

Wow, I would never have thought of using ZBrush! I have it and I'm in the early stages of "learning curve" (the UI makes my head hurt, but I'm keeping at it). Do you export and render out animation in some other package, or actually do individual frames in ZBrush? It'd save me some bucks (and learning time) if I could make use of what I already have...

Ktoon looks interesting but appears to be Linux only right now? Or am I just low on coffee in my bloodstream?

This is a great thread so far.

I don't know anything about artwork, my man does all of that, but I believe his pipeline is as follows:

Get the basic mesh done in a 3D modelling app (he uses Maya).
Rig and setup all of the animations in Maya
Use ZBrush for all the painting and simply making it look pimp.
Render and screenshot to transparent PNGs that are then fine-tuned in Photoshop.

Ahh, that makes total sense! I'll have to see if I can get ZBrush to play nice with Blender (which I'm using while I save up for Lightwave). Thanks for the info! :-)

Note on Moho it was $100.00 now it was bought up by e Frontier and changed it's name to Anime studio and sells for 199.99 It is basically the same program. Note if your a register Moho user you have until october 31st to cross grade for free. I can not blame lost marble for making some money on the deal.

I like Moho (now Anime Studio) a lot. In my opinion, it was being sold very cheap at $100...the new $199 price tag is still well worth it imo.
