stable torque for linux? Why not use Loki's?
by Matthew Shapiro · in Torque Game Engine · 04/09/2002 (3:45 pm) · 10 replies
I was looking for games recently and it occured to me (cause i'm uisng linux now). Loki's out of business and gave their source code back to their respective authors... doesn't hat mean sierra has the linux T2 code? Doesn't that mean you can get a stable linux build out of it? just owndering cause i thought i heard that the current linux build was unstable.

From what I have seen the linux code runs fine. I havent done any stress comparison test but from what Ive done with it I dont see a problem.-Tim aka Spock

I'll agree with Tim, after getting the nVidia drivers running correctly with Mandrake 8.2 on my test PC I was able to compile and run the Torque HEAD with no problem. It even worked fine with Marks Auto-download code.

I agree with LabRat & Tim, our current project Dog of Prey works very well on Linux and it was more than easy to make the port. Torque is really a multi-platform game engine.

Maybe it's time I switch to a new distro.

Has anyone tried the latest NVidia drivers (for Linux), the 2880 version? My system has seemed less stable since then. Konqueror has started crashing for the first time, and I'm getting weird activity overall. I'm not really sure how to describe it, it's just some little things are making me feel like my system is unstable.Maybe it's time I switch to a new distro.

This was KDE 2.2 I tried. Im thinking of giving KDE 3.0 a try to see how it is.

I know this is flamebait but have you considered that it might be KDE? I found KDE crashed quite a bit and I switched to gnome. Gnome seems to run solid, although it might not provide all of the userfriendly stuff like KDE and windows, it is stable. This was KDE 2.2 I tried. Yacine, I've been using the 2880 drivers and I haven't had problems. Make sure that your NVIDIA GLX and NVIDIA kernel packages are the same version. One time I had a version mismatch between them and had problems with konqueror and kde.

I agree with Jeff and Tim and LabRat and Frank, although I'm biased. :) The main thing that I didn't like about the linux port so far was the performance, but that has improved mightly since switching to the asm blender, and I feel its now quite close to the windows version.Yacine, I've been using the 2880 drivers and I haven't had problems. Tim: It is flamebait. I'm not gonna get a into an argument over this because I believe to each its own. I've used a whole bunch of windows and desktop managers. KDE works best for me. I know Gnome is getting better, and one day I will give a try again. I've switched a couple times between Gnome and KDE, and I just find KDE is better for me.
These problems have been very recent. I will try to upgrade to 3.0, but I want to understand what the actual problem is.
John:
I checked and it's the same versions. I usually try and make sure I don't screw things up like that. I don't know what's going on. I'll try going back to a previous version and see if things stop. It's weird little glitches. Maybe 3-4 times in the past five days, konqueror just stopped responding. maybe KDE 3.0 will solve it. If it gets to much then I will try something else (maybe even Gnome again =)

As to the actual topic of this thread, I also thought that getting Loki's code would be a good idea. But I realize now that it would be a mess to actually get the code, then extract all the tribes2 specific code, and make it stable and integrate with the rest of the Torque code.Tim: It is flamebait. kde <- What I run when I don't care about CPU cycles or bandwidth. (My Desktop!)
gnome <- What I run to annoy the KDE lovers when I have to repair their machines.
fvwm <- What makes me run in terror.
fvwm95 <- What makes me run for a shotgun.
windowmaker <- What makes me re-install window managers..
twm <- What I run with VNC to replace screen (since modems are so 1999).
mwm <- What? That runs?
Any questions?
P.S. I have several machines using VNC + twm as an X replacement for "screen" on a console.
