Database

Are there any resources explaining the very essentials of working with databases? I plan to talk to php as the interface to MySQL. A description of the core commands would be great.
Been reading through the forums about Torque working with a database, like MySQL. I've posted a couple of promising ones below, but I was hoping someone could give me clarity. I want to (infrequently) store and retrieve fairly small amounts of data. I'm trying to implement the simplest thing possible as I'm learning this stuff.
These look promising, but I want the very basics:

http://www.garagegames.com/index.php?sec=mg&mod=resource&page=view&qid=5286
I know learning Torque stuff comes in the form of 'hard knocks', but a little help is appreciated.
Oh, and I'm just interested in the Torque side, of course. I'm not asking for any php/MySQL help :)
