I was thinking that when I saw the word "Drow". Weren't the Drow Elves actually part of the Tolkien universe?

Tolkien was there first.
The origional D&D races were "borrowed" from the Hobbit and LoTR. TSR got sued and had to remove Hobbits... so they became.......... Halflings.
