Is TSE stand-alone and what cost when official?

by Joseph_7 · in Torque Game Engine Advanced · 05/30/2006 (8:07 am) · 7 replies

I am a little confused with the difference between the Torque Game Engine and Torque Shader Engine and their costs. On the TSE product page, it states that "Dual licensing for TSE will be available when complete with an 'indie'license for $295 and a commercial license for $995"; the TSE FAQ states "TGE "Indie" Licensees can always upgrade to TSE for $195".

Now, I'm reading this as: When TSE is officially released, it will cost $195 as an upgrade to owners of TGE; or, TSE can be purchased "stand-alone" for $295. Alternatively, does "dual licensing" mean TGE and TSE will be available as a package for $295 (which would be no different from owning TGE and upgrading to TSE)?

Which leads to...Is the Torque Shader Engine an advanced, stand-alone version of the Torque Game Engine or is TGE required to use TSE? If anyone can please clarify this I would appreciate it.

Right now:
Quote:
TSE cannot be purchased without owning TGE.
TGE = $100
TSE = $150

Total = $250

When released:
Quote:
TSE can be purchased without owning TGE.
TSE = $295

Total = $295

TSE is standalone, but parts of it are similiar to TGE. (which is a good thing)

I have a question. I bought the TSE, now do we need to compile what was downloaded for the TSE as it's own build, or does it need to be compiled with the TGE as well?

Also, what if I own the TGE lighting pack, does this need to be compiled with the TSE as well, or not? Any answers would be welcome.

Thanks

Yes, compile TSE on its own. It is a separate product from TGE and the two run independently of each other.

You don't need to integrate the lighting kit with TSE as it is not compatible with TSE. The lighting kit works with TGE and if purchased a pre compiled version may be downloaded. The lighting kit will not work with TSE. TSE will have its own lighting implementation at some point in time.

Hi Steven,

Yes, you should compile TSE on its own in a completely separate project. TSE code can and should be compiled on its own.

Unfortunately, the TGE lighting kit (TLK) does not work with TSE. It only works with TGE. A new version of TLK designed specifically for TSE will probably be released shortly after TSE is released.

I hope that helps,

Aaron E.
