TGB pricing in most recent GarageGames newsletter

by Joseph_7 · in General Discussion · 05/28/2006 (2:48 pm) · 5 replies

From the most recent newsletter, the price for Torque Game Builder (Indie License) is $100 for the engine and $250 for the engine+source code; the source code can be purchased as an upgrade to the engine purchase for $195, according to the newsletter.

This means that the source code will cost $45 more if purchsed separately as an upgrade instead of as a package with the engine. Why the extra cost and are the Torque Game Engine and Torque Shader Engine going to follow the same pricing plan? I e-mailed the author of the newsletter this question but have not recieved a reply; maybe they're busy preparing the TGB for official launch. Anybody?

This was mentioned in the TGB forums, and basically it's more because if you buy the binary+source at the same time, you're getting a bundle rate.

Why not just buy it now for $100 & have access to the source (or $80 if you already own TGE)? It's quite a bargain at that price. Not to mention quite nice of them to give everyone advance notice about the price increase (still a good deal either way you look at it).

For reals. Pay $180 now and get TGE and TGB with full sources each.

@Wedge and Frampton:

Good thinking. I didn't look at it that way. I've been seriously considering purchasing the Engines and that seems to be the best option available now.

I want to throw my two cents in about the new prices, because I fit into the uber-beginner category of kids whose programming experience is limited to scripting in flash and works a blue-collar job making 10 bucks an hour (I.E. the type of person that is genuinely effected by major pricing decisions like this). Aside from that, I'm stingy and rarely buy ANYTHING that costs more than 20 bucks.

I already own TGE and T2D, so I was lucky to get in at these basement prices, but I just want to say that $295 (under the MOST expensive scenario) is something I would have been more than willing to pay for the tools made available to me with the Game Builder. The ease of use factor alone makes it a better option to me than every other piece of software on the market (free or otherwise) that is available today.

I know you guys weren't complaining about the price or anything, I just wanted this to be said by someone like myself who is the type of person that would usually be completely turned off by something that costs this much money, not because its not worth it, but because a kids gotta eat.

Torque is SO worth it.
