Mapping - Going Nutz

Ok, I've spent 3 days attemping to make buildings for my game. I'm going bonkers trying to do so.
Quark is a pain in the butt. I couldn't even get it to load up my textures. **bangs head into thin wall*
So I tried to use Hammer. Yet another increably large headache here. It's looking for wads (snickers, I thought you found stuff like that in packs of snuff or babies diapers). So I do a google search to help me figure out how to make a wad (yet another pointless joke).
I spend 4 hrs roaming these forums looking for answer to the age old question. How can a noob make a simple map for his game that is suppose to be for people who have no clue what they are doing???
I understand the ELUA issues involving Hammer. The wad thing seems to be much more of a headache than I care to handle.
down to th questions.....
1. How in the hell do you load textures into Quark? Since it's my only free option (cries).
2. Is it possible to make a building in (modeler) and do the lighting in WorldEditor?
3. Can somebody pass me some Tylenol extra?
4. How in gods name does GG make their maps?

James what version of Quark are you using? I've done that via their readme files. I just imported like a bluejean print. never showed up.I'm using LightWave 8.0.

but it should be out in a couple months and will probably be
the defacto standard for making maps for torque.
maybe you could start saving and meanwhile
work on stuff besides maps ?
frustrating, i know.

You should try 3d World Studio, it's about 80 dollars but if you are serious about game design then 80 dollars is worth it...

Use 3dworld studio... Its a hellava lot easer that the rest...

It doesn't have all of the bells and whistles Quark offers, but 3DWS is a lot more intuitive.

Agreed! I've been using 3DWS for a few days now, and I've gotten more done in those days than I have in weeks of wrestling with Quark's quirks. It doesn't have all of the bells and whistles Quark offers, but 3DWS is a lot more intuitive.

What about Cartography Studio? Is that still used for Torque? I'm using Quark and I've had a fair amount of success so far. The trick is to organise the tree. Texture mapping can get a bit ugly though. 3DWS looks awesome.

3dws is Cartography shop, IIRC, just the newist version.

What is quark??? is it a modeling platform???
#14
To be honest with you it's a royal night mare. In my Humble opinion. It's a 3D 2D modeling with interior lighting if I get things right. There is an exporter that so far hasn't had any issues exporting what I've wanted to it to export but the hell if I can get it to load my textures.
In short it's a map make orginally used to make Quake and doom maps. FreeWare.

@Sean - I could do a quick video if you want, on how I use Quark to make a building, and set it up for Torque, export it, load into Torque etc...
#16
Sure, but I also have the following issues as well.
1. the default building that pops ups. I have been able to compile it zero issues but 2. No concrete & null textures. Where are they? How do you all your own? I've tried so hard.
I started a new thread about this.

Or get used to DeleD 3D Editor (freeware at http://www.delgine.com) and wait for a little while before its Torque exporter comes out.

1st...seach www.Google.com for a program called Wally...its a FREE program used to load textures of various formats so that you can put htem inside a WAD file...WAD files are files that hold textures...like a special folder for them...
2nd...There is a version of Hammer Called Worldcraft....youll probably find a link to it from the site you find wally at, if you dont refer to Google again..i belive Worldcraft is in version 3.3 and if you read the EULA youll find they have made this tool ok for Torque users
3rd...search these forums and find the setup file for Worldcraft and follow the instruction that ive seen on the page when I searched for it..once you show Worldcraft where the WAD file is you make with Wally (in the options menu under Textures i belive)it will work fine...and then I would export to map and learn how to use the GUI map-DIF converter in the resources section..any further trouble and post here ill help if I can....
